Academy Salute to UPA in New York

I just found out that as part of its monthly Monday Nights With Oscar film series in New York, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present eight 35mm UPA shorts, including Academy Award winners Gerald McBoing Boing (1950) and Mister Magoo’s Puddle Jumper (1956), in a program selected and hosted by Oscar-winning animator and animation historian John Canemaker. The screening will take place on Monday, December 14, at 7:00 pm (EST). Location is the Academy Theater at Lighthouse International (111 E. 59th Street, NYC). Tickets are $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students w/ID. Advanced tickets must be purchased online or at the theater box office on the night of the event (pending availability). New Yorkers, check this out. |

Seeing vintage cartoons projected on a big screen in 35mm anywhere is a rare treat anymore. New Yorkers are fortunate.
I know this question is getting old- but when the heck is this stuff going to be available on DVD? I live in Atlanta so whenever this stuff is screened in LA or NYC, I’m SOL.
Most if not all of the UPA stuff at this point probably needs major restoration. Whoever owns the negatives will have to step up and foot such a bill prior to any DVD release.

Sony owns these films and have already released the McBoing Boing’s on a single DVD, and even a couple of theatrical Magoo shorts as bonus features on older catalog titles, along with the excellent, “Tell-Tale Heart”. All of the shorts looked just fine to me. Amid and Tee Boustow should work together with Sony in overseeing a proper release of the UPA films. I want to see this happen more than anything!
The entire Columbia animated library (including all the UPA shorts) was restored years ago for Totally Tooned In. Releasing the shorts would be simply a matter of slapping the TTI digital masters onto a disc.
The main problem would be one of brand recognition. Sony doesn’t own the Mr. Magoo character, and pushing a UPA boxset without reference to its biggest star would be a hard sell.
