Best. Birthday. Ever.

Yes, it’s me with my June Foray Award. I just got in from a wonderful night at the Annie Award ceremony, and yeah, it’s my birthday today. What a wonderful present and what a fantastic party. Ratatouille was the big winner last night, winning several Annie Awards including Best Animated Feature, Best Director and Best Writing (Animated Feature). I’m a bit too tired to recall all the winners, but Pixar’s Your Friend The Rat won for best short, El Tigre for Best Children’s TV Animation, Creature Comforts America for Best Animated Program, Power Shares Escape Average (Acme Filmworks) won for Best Commercial, and Surf’s Up, The Simpsons and Robot Chicken took home other prizes. It was a blast to be surrounded by some of the greatest names in animation (Groening, Bird, Kricfalusi, Canemaker, Keane, etc.). Tom Kenny did an amazing job as the master of ceremonies (more about this in a future post). The new venue, at UCLA’s Royce Hall, was terrific. Happy Birthday, Jerry, it’s so great of June Foray to have an award that recognizes someone like you, who doesn’t fit neatly into one of the Annie categories, but has done so much important work for animation. Hats off, you deserve this and much more. It was nice to spend a few minutes with you last night. I hope they continue at Ucla. It’s a perfect venue for an increasingly important event.

Great to see my pals Eric Towner and Seth Green (who shares the same birthday as you!) each win ANNIES for Robot Chicken Star Wars.
This was my third ANNIES and by far the best…love the new location!!!
The food was also really good and the venue seemed less crowded than in years past.
And yes Tom Kenny is the greatest MC in the Cartoon Universe !!!!

Sometimes nice guys finish first! Congratulations, Jerry and happy birthday. Sorry I so abruptly walked away from our conversation last night but I had a sudden bout with food poisoning which had to be addressed. I’m thinking of making a stop-motion short on the subject, animated with lemon bars.

Last night was my third year but the first time for most of my friends and we all had a blast. Enjoyed meeting Seth Green and Brad Bird (again!) — everyone is so nice – I only wish I could recognize people!!
One of these years I want to do the VIP thing but for now we are starving college students. :)
It was really cool to see the faces of many people – especially you and John K!
Every year I want to just make everyone hold up drawings of what they work on – it would make it all so much easier! X)
The Spongebob crew doing voices for Casablanca, Singing in the Rain & Godfather was awesome!

Congrats on the award!! One of these years I’m actually going to make it to the ceremony . . . I can only imagine what Eartha Kitt’s acceptance speech was like (was she there to accept in person?).
Warm wishes on your birthday… and congratulations on your award. Would that every rights holder — and every rights holder’s video department — understood the wisdom and profit to be gained from respecting cartoon research. (And hiring you, but that’s a no-brainer under the circumstances.)

I got to shake John K’s hand :) I even got to meet Don Hertzfeldt, who I found to be a total class act for showing up to the event even though the organization totally gave him the shaft. And I think Brad Bird needs to install a few new shelves now to make room for all his new hardware.

Fave moment from the night: While escorting Seth Green back to the photo op after he presented the Writing awards, he stopped for a moment and said “Wait, I’m up for this next one (TV Directing.) Ah, I won’t win, anyway.”
Cue sitcom cliche #147.
I dashed back to get Seth, Seth dashed out at the same time after seeing it in the TV in the photo area, and after he came back I couldn’t help but ask “What was that you were saying earlier?” Turns out it was his birthday that day, so he got one hell of a present.
Favorite presenters of the evening: James Hong & Scott Adsit. Mr. Hong stole the show. Year of the Rat, indeed.
Proudest moment: Having Jonathan Gay, Robert Itsumi, and Gary Grossman personally thank me for putting them up for the Ub Iwerks award this year. (I think there were a few notable examples of Flash missing from that collection, though. No “Happy Tree Friends?”)
And of course, it was a great honor to get a Certificate of Merit from ASIFA-Hollywood, made even better when so many of my fellow volunteers got one at the same time. Thank you again from the bottom of my heart, shriveled and cholesterol-chocked raisin that it is.

Jerry, let me add my voice of CONGRATULATIONS on your June Foray Award this year! You are certainly deserving. I think we both go back to about the same time, the late ’70’s. I really enjoyed our discussion at the Animation Guild Christmas Party this year…..reminiscing about Bob Clampett and all the other animation pioineers who were still among us back in those days. You are really dedicated to this wonderful art form and tirelessly promote the best things about it. Thank you for a wonderful website we can all enjoy and and share ideas. Congrats again…and keep up the great work!
