Cartoon Spooktacular

On Tuesday October 21st I’ll be screening a selection of spooky, kooky, strange and creepy Halloween related animated cartoons at the Silent Movie Theatre on Fairfax Avenue in Hollywood. The vintage prints will be in 16mm and 35mm, and I’ll be running some surprises and bringing along some special guests. More details in a post closer to the playdate, but I wanted to give our readers an early heads up.

    Personally I think the best cartoons of the 30’s involved supernatural elements in some way or another. By the 40’s spooks became a tad more gentrified in appearance (derbys) but still the cartoons retained an appropriately gothic atmosphere - ‘The Friendly Ghost’ (Casper) & ‘Lulu’s Indoor Outing’ (Little Lulu) are good examples.

    "I just saw [$9.99] in the Holland animation festival. It is one of the best animated films that I’ve ever seen! I don’t talk about animation (because animation, and etc. are things that I’m not interested in). The design is good enough not to tease you. But the literature, the script, and the cinema in this film are fantastic. Made me think about one of my favorite all time movies “Smoke”. Yes, this film is a full Auster-esque experience. Smart and witty! It has to be nominated for an Oscar!"
