FRIDAY in LA: Yuri Norstein at USC

Heads up, Angelenos. The USC School of Cinematic Arts invites you (or anyone who can get to USC this Friday) to participate in a retrospective evening and conversation with legendary Russian animator Yuri Norstein. The admission is free. The event begins at 7:00pm on Friday, February 5th, 2010 in the Norris Cinema Theatre/Frank Sinatra Hall. The conversation with Norstein will be led by Ukranian animator Igor Kovalyov (Milch, The Rugrats Movie, Hen His Wife, etc.). Norstein will also present a preview of his feature-length film adaptation of Nikolai Gogol’s Overcoat. The evening will conclude with a dessert reception in front of the theater.

To RSVP and for more information check the USC Cinematic Arts website. Below is one of Norstein’s classic films, Hedgehog In the Fog (1976):

Honestly, Igor Kovalev should get title billing, too. Oh, 2 of the greatest animators of all-time having a conversation about Soviet-era animation, art, and a masterwork in production that will probably never get released? Sounds pretty interesting.

Hedgehog in the Fog is one of my favorite short films of all time. Sad I can’t be there…:(

Man, the Bay Area gets shafted every time. Here the screening is $25 (and no Kovalev); I know Norstein’s worth it, but that is pretty expensive, and on Super Bowl Sunday!

I’ve always loved the look of this Hedgehog film. Such depthness with such flat characters.

I wished I was in LA for this.

  • John Ford

…for those in the Seattle area, he’ll be in Olympia Wednesday, February 10, 2010 – 7:30 pm, The Evergreen State College, Communications Building, Recital Hall

I guess I shouldn’t complain, at least I’m in an area where he’s appearing. Sorry about my earlier comment.

Unfortunately, reservations are no longer being accepted. I tried RSVP’ing, but got this: “The RSVP list for this event is now FULL.”

Saw a retrospective in Boston (MFA School) in the late 80′s where a woman translated the animated shorts in heavy accent on the fly, and so Masters of Animation releases never had the same charm. He might have been their If you can go, and it’s a talk and a bunch of films, drink deeply!!!
