Glenn Barr’s Haunted Paradise

Forget the fact that Glenn Barr did backgrounds for Ren & Stimpy, or The New Woody Woodpecker Show, or has contributed to Mad Magazine and DC Comics. Barr has emerged as a fine artist and painter in his own right and one of stars of the low brow art movement. He’s got a new book, Haunted Paradise, and he’ll be in L.A. tonight and in Palm Springs tomorrow to do book signings.

Catch him tonight from 6pm to 9pm at La Luz de Jesus Gallery in Silverlake, at 4633 Hollywood Blvd. On Sunday afternoon from 4pm to 7pm he’ll be at M Modern Gallery, 2500 N. Palm Canyon Drive.

  • I’ll definitely be picking up Glenn’s book. And I only wish I could be at that signing.

I just picked up Glenn’s book at La Luz de Jesus. I waited patiently while Glenn was talking with friends at his signing table. There was no one else around, no line or anything, so I stood quietly and thumbed through his book while he talked. After over 15 minutes, it became apparent he wasn’t going to end his conversation anytime soon .. so I walked out. I’m sure he’s a very nice guy, and he’s certainly a marvelous artist .. but he didn’t seem very interested in signing copies of his book. -_- .. oh, and FYI — the painting pictured above isn’t in the book (though a preliminary drawing which it’s based on is included). Great book, nonetheless.

  • Betty should not look … like that.

    The goggles. They do nothing!

I went to La Luz to get the book, have it signed, and meet Glenn Barr. I was expecting a crowd but I was surprised (at around 7 PM) that there were so few people there. I think because of that, Glenn was very accommodating. He spent time with anyone who wanted to talk and signed his book, his toy, and would probably have signed anything else you asked him to. After I got my book I wandered around enjoying the gallery and came back to listen in on the conversations. It was a nice opportunity. I wish I had taken better advantage of it.

I recommend the book. It’s stuffed with great images of his paintings, drawings, sketches that lead to paintings, photographs of what inspires him, and a nice bio.

  • I love Glenn’s stuff. He’s such an awesome artist, I’ll be getting this book for sure!!

  • Glen’s work is truly inspirational. This is a must have book on my list.

…You know, Betty *has* looked far worse. She’s probably just still depressed over her having been played by Rosie O’Donnell in the live-action movie. I mean, the camera’s supposed to add 10lbs to the average woman’s figure, but…:P
