The companion book “Golden Legacy” includes a great essay on JP Miller’s work by Dan Yaccarino. Miller’s “Little Red Hen” is a favorite of mine as well. I wish I could see some of those originals.

John Canemaker wrote a definitive biography of J P Miller in the last two issues of ASIFA’s Cartoons magazine. I wasn’t too thrilled with the writing in the Golden Legacy book. The pictures are great though.

Wouldn’t it be great if this exhibit could visit the fifty states! Who hasn’t had a “Golden Book” at some time in their life? This exhibit would appeal to a wide audience.

Just saw the exhibit; it’s quite lovely. About 50 pieces in all. Good eye, Mark Newgarden, on the Tenggren pieces; I believe they were indeed prints, but at least high-quality ones. I particularly loved seeing the Garth Williams paintings. It’s $10 to get in the museum, which is geared more for toddlers than older kids. But the exhibit is definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area!

Stehen, Thanks for the tip about the Canemaker piece! I searched the ASIFA website, but I can’t find anything about Cartoon Magazine, much less back issues. Is this article available?

I was at the opening and asked the curator(s) about the Tenggrens. All but his pieces were culled from the Golden Book company archive in Racine.
Evidently Tenggren was the rarest Golden Book illustrator of his day who had the clout (or foresight, or desire) to retain his originals and they were loaned for this show from another source. This IS a traveling show and I was told that his originals were indeed displayed for the first leg of the tour (sorry I cannot remember where that was) but they were not available for travel, so prints were substituted in the suceeding venues…

Hi there, I’m the Editorial Director of Golden Books and the co-curator of the Golden Books art exhitibition. I also edited GOLDEN LEGACY. Just thought I’d post some recent developments on the exhibition, based on your comments/questions above. . . this show originated last fall in Abilene, TX at the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature. As Mark N notes above, the Tenggren originals were in that show, but had to be returned to the lender for a bit. And yes in their place are high-quality prints, for now. But I’m happy to say that the originals will be returned to the exhibition soon–I hope starting in New York, at the show’s current home at the Children’s Museum of Manhattan (not sure yet). However, one original Tenggren (a piece from the Little Golden Book TAWNY SCRAWNY LION) has already been reinstated. . . 2 pieces of JP Miller’s Little Golden Book THE LITTLE RED HEN are included, just for all you folks who love JP and that book in particular (I know this is a fave of animators etc. and for that reason made sure it went in)… there are 2 Mary Blair originals, rather large pieces, from I CAN FLY. Of course Tibor Gergely is well-represented with some awesome pieces. Dan Yaccarino has a piece in as well. So does Bob Staake, who works digitally.
