June 23, 2009 4:00 pm

The annual Marc Davis Celebration of Animation continues with a second helping at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Beverly Hills, California. On July 28th, the Academy will honor Hayao Miyazaki in a special tribute which will include screening clips from his greatest films and an in-person conversation between Miyazaki and John Lasseter.

Need I say anymore? Tickets are on sale now. $5. for general public, $3. for Academy members. Seating is (ahem) limited. Go here now.

When you go to buy tickets, the website displays a pop-up saying “Tickets go onsale for this event 06/25/09 09:01 AM PDT!”

Just FYI.

I’m wondering what the Academy will be doing differently this time to accomodate a large crowd? It sounds like the last event was a horrible experience for some ticket holders. There’s no way I’m going to buy a ticket and head up there only to get shut out.

Isn’t there enough cool stuff going on in LA without rubbing our noses in the fact that here in the Bay area we have to pay $25 to hear Miyazaki. For that price we better get Lasseter, Pete Docter, and Brad Bird.

if the academy got smart, they could stream this kind of thing online for everyone else…I’d pay 5 bucks for that…

$25 isn’t bad if it guarantees you actually get in to see the show. The LA venue will probably oversell — and it doesn’t ensure admittance.

The Marc Davis shows always oversell…the Academy had a really big problem last month with their tribute to Milt Kahl. Get tickets early (i.e. tomorrow, since you can’t buy them today) and show up an hour before hand to guarantee a spot!!

It’s so cool that everytime a Miyazaki movie opens here in the U.S. Miyazaki himself takes some time to fly off to the States for a visit.

Oh my. This is a chance I cannot pass up. Thanks for the tipoff, Jerry.

The terrific 2.5 hour documentary on Miyazaki and Lasseter is still available on DVD. It’s pretty amazing.

I live on the other side of the continent, but come hell or high water I will be there!

Hey, Jerry. Since when did they have two Marc Davis Lectures twice in a row? This is unorthodox! -a.j.

I spoke to someone at the Academy’s box office today… they were absolutely stunned by how quickly the event sold out.
