I’m moderating a panel at the Ottawa International Animation Festival this weekend. It’s called “Animation Makes Me Laugh: Ha!” and it’s all about what’s funny and what isn’t in animation. There’s no sure-fire formula to funny so I can’t guarantee we’ll unlock any secret keys to humor, but I can guarantee you’ll get to hear from four funny and talented filmmakers: Nick Cross, Will Krause, Fran Krause and Superjail creator Christy Karacas. The panel takes place Sunday, September 21, at 3pm in the National Gallery (Lecture Hall). Drop by and say hello. 6 Comments » posted in Events, Fran Krause September 17, 2008 5:51 am

If you are anywhere near the Pacific Northwest this weekend, head on over to Spark Animation ‘08, an animation festival and state-of-the-art showcase sponsored by SIGGRAPH ACM Vancouver. The festival started yesterday and will run through Sunday night. All of the events are ‘a la carte’ so you can select which events you want to attend and buy tickets for those, either online or at the door. Featured guests include Mark Osborne & John Stevenson (directors of Kung Fu Panda), Jimmy Hayward & Steve Martino (directors of Horton Hears a Who!), Ed Hooks (author: Acting for Animators), and me, Jerry Beck (screening The Worst Cartoons Ever! on Saturday night, 7pm at the Vancity Theatre). Bill Plympton’s latest feature, a Marv Newland retrospective and Leslie Iwerks’ The Pixar Story are among the special screenings. A party following my screening is free for all festival-goers – come by and say hello! Full schedule and ticket ordering info is posted here. 5 Comments » posted in Events September 9, 2008 11:39 am
Contest time! We are giving away TWO all-access AnimaPasses (each valued at $200) to next week’s Ottawa International Animation Festival. Seeing as how its election season, we’re presenting a politically-flavored photo caption contest. The winners will be the two people who provide the funniest and most Brew-worthy captions (as deemed by Jerry and Amid) for this meeting of the minds from the late-’70s. A few important notes: Please enter a caption below ONLY if you’re planning on attending the festival. ONE entry per person. Contest ends on Thursday evening at 11:59pm EST.

Cinecon, the film buff convention I attended over Labor Day weekend, is not a place to do animation research, but from time to time I’ve found some nice pieces there to add to my files. For example, one dealer had a stack of Andrews Sisters photos — hundreds of them – which apparently came from the estate of one of the sisters. I shuffled through them and found this nice publicity shot of the gals in front of the boards from the Johnny Fedora and Alice Blue Bonnet sequence in Make Mine Music. (Click on thumbnail below to see full image).
I found another foreign sheet that I couldn’t resist – a poster for The Man Called Flintstone in Spanish. Gotta love Fred and Barney with blue 5-o’clock-shadow! My prize find this year, stuck in a stack cartoon stills (mainly of Hanna Barbera TV shows) was this still/photostat of a “George” model sheet from Tex Avery’s Of Fox And Hounds. This piece has “property of Walker Edmiston” rubber stamped on the back (Edmiston, a voice actor, puppeteer and kids show host passed away last year). Click on thumbnail below to see full image. All in all, I had a great time at the show – and was glad I could find a few goodies to share with my friends. 5 Comments » posted in Events, Tex Avery August 30, 2008 2:57 pm
Don Hertzfeldt has just completed his latest short, I Am So Proud of You. It’s his longest work to date, and to celebrate he’s going on a 16-city US tour this fall. During these events, he’ll screen the new short, as well as show some of his older films and speak with audiences. Below is the list of cities he’ll be appearing in. “Too Art for TV” has put out a call for entries for its 2008 edition. The yearly New York art show, founded by Liz Artinian (the color supervisor on The Venture Bros.), is “designed to promote and encourage the fine arts in the animation industry.” All types of art media are accepted for consideration, and 25-35 artists will be selected for the exhibition. According to the submission site, “All applicants are selected by committee this year. Our committee members are artists in the industry who have been pre-invited to help with the show. This year’s committee members (so far) are Kelly Denato, Todd Lown, Christy Karacas, Jared Deal, and Justin Simonich.” The deadline to submit an application is September 5. The exhibition will take place in November at the Erebuni Gallery Space in Williamsburg. |
