Tomm Moore’s highly stylish animated feature, The Secret of Kells will screen in Los Angeles one time only, at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica, on Saturday September 26th at 4pm. It’s part of the L.A. Irish Film Festival.

The Secret of Kells, which never received an official U.S. release, was produced by Kilkenny based Cartoon Saloon. Check the trailer here. For additional information and art from the film, check director Moore’s production blog.

Nice one Tomm! A great film. Someone in the US has to pick this up for distribution…

WATCH IT! I saw it twice at the Berlinale this year, and it is one of the most beautiful animated films I know.

Are there any plans to release this on DVD/Blu Ray? I would really love to see it but I’m not in LA. :(

All fans of 2D animation and creator-driven, personal films owe it to themselves to see KELLS while it’s here!

I can’t tell you how sad I am that this movie isn’t getting a proper release. Actually, I can.

I am very, very sad.

I’m more than halfway across the country from LA. I’ve been drooling over this film for quite some time. I’m crossing my fingers for a US release, that’d be fantastic!

I have a feeling disney might buy is and shelve it. So the Frog Princess can be the WELCOME BACK 2D film.

@ Joe: Disney has already handled distribution in Ireland, and screenings were held here at the Burbank lot and at Pixar, so it’s not as if they’re trying to make it disappear… (Not to mention they just released Ponyo here in the states)

It hasn’t had a release over in the UK either – would really like to see this – fingers crossed.

What the heck?! One time only? and in LA? ::punches wall:: UGH!

Each time I see the previews for this film, it looks like the Irish version of THE LITTLE PRINCE AND THE EIGHT-HEADED DRAGON!

It’s too bad I won’t be around in LA to see this (I’ve got other plans), and that it may not get a wide theatrical release here, but I really hope this movie gets a DVD & Blu-Ray release here, at the very least.

Incidentally, the banner used for the site (and on this article) looks a slight bit, well… suggestive. Not that I’m complaining or anything. :)

This is a work of love, a true dream come true, a lifetime achievement.

Congratulations, i admire you.

The producers have confirmed that a limited US release for later this year or early 2010 has been agreed but no dates or locations have been announced yet.

I would highly encourage everyone within 100 miles to go see the film, and not just because I’m Irish and our economy needs the money!

It’s a truly great film in many ways that absolutely HAS to be seen on the big screen. I received my DVD copy the other day and although it looked great on my TV, it was a far inferior experience compared to the awe and wonder I had at the cinema.

According to the most recent update on the blog, they do have a US distributor and are aiming for an October 2009 release. A DVD release is also planned:

I made sure I saw this when it showed up in NYC. I loved how chatty the kids (and grownups) in at theater were before the film started, but as soon as “Kells” got going the room was perfectly silent until the end.

It’s a really beautiful film. I want to see it again!

Thanks for the new bit of info, Russel H! I look forward to whatever develops.

Beautiful work from Cartoon Saloon.

Hopeful someone in the states and canada wakes up and distributes this work of art.

If you live three thousand miles northeast of L.A., you’ll be pleased to hear the Atlantic Film Festival is screening it that very same day. It will be shown in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Sept. 26 at 2 p.m. at the Oxford Theatre.

Fantastic film, wonderful style. Just released over here (France) in Blu-Ray (weirdly, the only soundtracks are French and… Britton? What gives?), and it’s a blast for the eyes. Really amazing.
