ASIFA-Hollywood has just announced that actor/director William Shatner will host the 37th Annual Annie Awards on Saturday, February 6, 2010, at UCLA’s Royce Hall in Los Angeles, CA. Very Cool!

Tickets have gone on sale for the event at the Annie Award website. The evening begins with a pre-reception at 5 p.m. followed by the Annie Awards ceremony at 7 p.m. and post award party at 10 p.m. All events will be held at Royce Hall. The Annie Awards ceremony will also be webcast on annieawards.org beginning Tuesday, February 9, 2010.

Oh if only he would sing Rocket Man….

What a horrible idea. I don’t think Shatner cares about animation, or anything other than himself. And the money it must have taken to get him to host and pretend to care could have been spent on having a better pre and or post event. Shatner doing this certainly isn’t going to garner the Annies any more attention than it normally gets (Shatner does these things ALL the time).

Why can’t the Annies be a celebration of animation BY the animation community instead of outsourcing it to some lame has been actor?

I’ve had the pleasure of speaking with William Shatner on a number of occasions. He’s warm, funny and very, very smart. Best of all, he “gets” animation.

There’s no experience like standing on your deck, BBQ-ing burgers when your cell phone rings. You answer it and a familiar voice says, “Steve? Hi. Bill Shatner here…”

He’s a cool guy. Don’t underestimate him.

Scott – You are completely wrong. Shatner DOES care about animation. He is not being paid to host (nor has anyone ever been paid to host or present at the Annies – it’s considered an industry honor). Shatner has presented Annies at previous ceremonies and has earned his credentials as a voice actor (from Osmosis Jones to Atomic Betty). The announcement of his hosting the Annies HAS gotten the event (and animation in turn) much more publicity than in previous years. And besides, I like him.

Tom Kenny, who asked to take a break this year, will be in attendance and supports the choice of Shatner. Personally, I think this year’s awards show will rock. Who doesn’t want to get an Annie from Captain Kirk?

Nice image, Jerry. It’s also (ironically) appropriate, given this news.

Shatner should show up with flesh-colored eye whites, in tribute to Filmation’s rendition of his younger self. That would be righteous.

Yes, but unless he does something to reverse the force, he will be down to county fairs and pig roasts pretty quick.

Exciting! I can’t wait to be there! :)

Mmmm. Pig roasts!

I especially like the “lame has-been actor” comment coming from the lame never-was, never-will-be animator.

“Has been actor?”

You’ve not listened to his last album, have you?

I still have the “William Shatner and Guest” placard I swiped from his seat at the “Osmosis Jones” premiere.
