Dude. I’m sick of sarcastic animators referring to anything with talking animals as “furry”. Before the internet, you would have called this “talking animals” or “cartoons” But nowadays ANYTHING with a talking animal, dragon, or fantasy creature is immedeately associated with that gross, unfortunate fandom.

FURRY is pornographic fan art, usually involving uber-extreme fetishes, the kind you have to see to believe.

Thanks to the internet, whenever i tell someone “Oh hey, I wrote a cool werewolf movie.” I hear “Oh, so it’s a furry movie?”

NO! It’s a dang werewolf movie! Arrgh! *tears hair out*

wait, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is playing a white astronaut? not sure what to think about that…

That makes all sorts of questions pop into my head, but which is the right one to ask?

I’m shocked, but Planet 51 actually looks competent. I thought it would follow all the other hideous beyond reason CGI kiddie flicks like Doogal, Space Chimps, and Fly Me to the Moon but now it actually has my interest. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs had me rolling my eyes too before I saw the lastest trailer. They are in no way up to the level of anticipation I have for The Princess and the Frog but I could at least see myself potentially sitting through a screening of them. The best I can hope for is the “Squeakuel” to AATC goes mostly unoticed and quickly disappears from our lives. I had the same hope for the first movie though and the damn thing made over 357 million in ticket sales worldwide. On a side note I can’t help but notice that some of the “aliens” in Planet 51 opt for the shirt with no pants look while others are completly clothed. I guess that there isn’t really a set rule with anthromoporphic fictional creatures and coverage.

Jerry, I hope you’re right about PRINCESS. After watching the insipid Disney Channel “Super Secret Behind the Scenes Tour Mega-Spectacular” just to get a glimpse of the film I have to say that the design work and animation look top notch. I’m a little worried about the Dreamworks-like tone of the jokes. I’m going to reserve judgment until I see the film, though. I’m happy to see Disney doing traditional animation again. I just want so badly for this to be a home run so that both Disney and the other studios recognize that 2D is just as viable and vital as 3D animation. Both have their place and both can deliver experiences that are unique. I think that the studios have lost sight of that.

Yes, I can tell from that trailer that this Alvin and the Chipmunks movie is going to be some filthy, barbaric, disgusting furry porn…just like anything portraying Mickey and Minnie Mouse, right? Am I right?

Anyway, that Planet 51 trailer rose my expectations a little. The concept is a welcome deviation from the norm and the comedy seems like it can deliver! Alvin and the Chipmunks on the other hand?…I’m still not sure why the first one was made, so I’ll probably just ignore the second one…

Matt, to tell the truth, when I first got into the furry fandom, I understood “furry” as “animal themed”. You’d go a long way already to qualify as “furry” by just having talking animals in your story. The last mile would come from the story’s theme having some focus on the characters’ animal traits, or if the character designs put some emphasis on their animal appearance. So while “furry” isn’t as overarching as “talking animal”, it’s pretty close. Sure, there’s loads of furry porn; that’s just one part of the fandom. I think you can use “furry” like you can use “cartoon”, as the name of a medium instead of a genre.

Now I am aware that the people who worked on the Chippettes got harrassed by some real jerks sending dirty letters about the characters. We can joke about furry porn; the former of course goes too far.

So this is what David Kaufman has been up to since “Danny Phantom” got the axe. I’m sold!

You know, I think the new AatC designs would be absolutely adorable if they were hand drawn. Or at the very least more stylized like Pixar or Dreamworks characters.

But as it stands, they fall into this disturbing line between cute and the uncanny valley. Especially the teeth. I hate it when cartoon animals are depicted with realistic human teeth (unless its a one note gag like Daffy grinning sheepishly).

To David: I was wondering why that alien kid sounded so familiar! Haha.

And I agree with Jeffrey as well about Planet 51 and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs surpassing expectations(well, based on their trailers at least). I’m not however that excited over The Princess and the Frog. Sure it’s hand-drawn, but is that their ONLY selling point? It’s another princess movie which has been done a million times already. I’d honestly rather go see food falling from the sky or ET-in-reverse.

AREA 51 bothers me because the “aliens” pointlessly speak English. This is the first movie in which that has ever been an issue.

I only made it about twenty minutes into the first CHIPMUNKS movie before I ejected the DVD and threw it into the spackle-spreader bucket. Worst seventeen cents I ever spent. Is it possible the second one is… worse?

Who paid for the infrastructure of the chipmunk schools? The film looks as if it takes place in California. Is this yet another obvious waste of taxpayer money that has helped throw the state into financial ruin?

Blame Schwarzenegger.

I’m actually surprised by the “Planet 51″ trailer. It actually looks okay. I’m also delighted by the new trailer of “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”, coincidentally also being released by Sony.

As for this “Squeakquel”, let’s beg that the Chipmunk fever has already died out. Most of the first film’s fan-base was teenaged girls and I think most of them will be distracted by several other, more worthwhile, releases and the Thanksgiving blockbuster release of “New Moon”.

Furry porn? I see no porn in it but just CG cartoon animals talking and being cute. It’s like calling Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away Hentai just because you saw an anime girl and boy holding hands together. Pfft…

On the side note, Alvin and the Chipmunks made big money despite the awful critic reviews.. So I hope they continue doing well.

I thought the animation is kinda neat though. Theodore’s walk is pretty cute there and is different from the other two, showing his personality quite well. Trying to convert 2D to 3D is not an easy thing to do, I’d say while they will never beat the 2D version of it, but those hair looks like it fits altogether pretty nicely without looking like an ugly wig or the like. Props to the CG artists who worked on this. As far as story goes, I am not keeping my hopes high about it but I will reserve any judgment for now.

Brian Kidd: Dude, PatF is directed by Musker and Clements. They used Dreamworks-type humour almost before there was a Dreamworks. People tend to ignore or conveniently forget HERCULES when discussing their output, and maybe that’s justified because of corporate intervention, I don’t know. But HERCULES has a wacky plot with a forced emotional “core,” pop culture jokes, Disney in-jokes, anachronisms, and sarcastic characters. It also has a couple of celebrity voices, though the film probably wasn’t advertised as “with the voices of James Woods, Charlton Heston, Amanda Plummer, Danny deVito, the fat dude from Seinfeld, and that one guy who’s one day gonna be in Damages.”

Seems like the best we’re getting out of the chipmunk thing is a release of “The Alvin Show” on DVD, though sadly it is not a disc I would recommend buying due to how it’s being done (and terribly so).

Planet 51 does look much more promising now, but I’m still not going to say that I am “excited” about it quite yet. Though I did laugh out loud at the urinating land rover.

The Squeakuel looks…well, I guess I’m not the target audience for this type of thing. I did sit through the first one, and a couple of the gags made me chuckle, so I suppose I will probably catch this one eventually.

For the record, I have to say that I rather enjoyed 1987’s “The Chipmunk Adventure” and hold it in fairly high regard. The character design was wonderful and the music was far better than I expected it would be.

A minority opinion I’m sure, but there you go.

Also, I think of the three, Simon looks the absolute worst. I don’t know why, but his facial expressions always seem…off, somehow. And it’s not the glasses, either, since it’s mainly in the way he seems to move his mouth.

I don’t know why some people seem slightly offended by Jerry’s jokey “Furry porn” comment. Check out the trailer – we see 6 creepy chipmunk children becoming aroused before being told to munk ourselves!! A sarcastic comment was in order!

I think it’s great that there’s so many animated features to discuss. Meatballs, Planet, Ice Age and Frog all look like they could be a lot of fun. I’m not expecting any masterpieces from these just yet, but it’s better than waiting years ’til the next animated film and then getting something like Aristocats or Black Cauldron.

I agree, the “Munk yourself” was a bad choice of words to use but I believe it’s suppose to be ‘Funk yourself’, if nothing else I think that’s the closest to what they wanted to pull a gag out from. I see nothing majorly wrong with the word ‘Funk yourself’ but Munk sounds strange.

I have personally made cartoons of animal characters before I even know of this ‘Furry culture’ existence, and when I found out about it it just makes me puke because people start stereotyping every animal cartoon characters as ‘furries’ and relating to the bad side of the culture, the porn, it’s just disgusting. I wouldn’t change my work because others are so stereotype about it, instead treat it as immature comments of people trying to look cool themselves to mock other people’s creative projects. Give Alvin and the Chipmunks a break, will ya? At least animators are getting job at this terrible economy situation right now.

Come Christmas Day, I feel safe in the knowledge that I will not be watching either of these piles of crap. I might watch Chuck Jones “Grinch,” but I’ll have a previous month or two of showings to choose from.

I’m really impressed with the character designs for Planet 51. It really looks like a movie worth checking out, and I hope it’ll deliver. :)

How come with every franchise sequel featuring CG craphics, the rendering gets flatter and the models seem less…believable.
