Animal Soccer World

animalsoocer.jpg

This has to be one of the worst animated films I’ve ever seen.

Animal Soccer World is apparently a Sony PlayStation 2 game that liberally rips off character designs from various Disney films (Bedknobs and Broomsticks, The Lion King, Bambi, et al) and produced on zero budget. Does anyone have the scoop on who made this atrocity? The people behind the music, voices, drawing, and animation (check those walk cycles) deserve to be recognized for their contributions to the art. Check out part one (below), if you dare.

Not enough? Click here for Part Two, Part Three, and Part Four.

(Thanks to Matt Wilson for pointing me toward this)

Danielle says:

Looks like Phoenix Games published the title. They’re a European-based low-budget (and low-quality) video game publisher. Didn’t know they ripped off of Disney films, though.

Homer J. Simpson says:

That is pretty bad, but if you want to experience some real horror, have a look at this animation from an old Legend of Zelda CD-I game from the early 90s:

Mish says:

I know it’s absolutely dreadful, but can you not see this aired on Adult Swim? It’s not far from it…..

…and as much as I don’t want to support it, I also love it for it’s lack of brain and…well…engrish.

purin says:

Is that Poochy the Rockin’ Dog?
Wow, not even the ducks in black leather were able to save this.

12/26/07  1:13pm
Mark N says:

My favorite part was the random dog playing the drums to cut into the next scene. The voices and running scenes were hilarious.

12/26/07  1:15pm
Corey K. says:

Those with a limited amount of time to gawp and giggle over this are advised to skip right to Part 4, which is only a minute and a half long and yet manages to encapsulate everything wrong with this puppy.

Wow.

Jim says:

Sander IS back at Sony.

12/26/07  1:28pm
Paul N says:

“Did you see it? Of course you did not, because you can only hear me…”

Oh, my sides! :0)

12/26/07  1:49pm

While the animation is, indeed, total crap, I bet a dollar that the producers knew exactly what they were doing otherwise, and had a blast making this.

I found the deadpan, even half-asleep vocal work charming and hilarious.

James says:

you guys are humoreless.
this is just hilarious.
thanks for the laugh

so wait…my season one of the tick dvd can’t have the mole people episode because mole people are in the incredibles for 10 seconds [marvel comics what?] but this game can exist? color me perturbed…

Chuck R. says:

“This has to be one of the worst animated films I’ve ever seen.”

Then you’ve never seen “Waking Life”. At least this has visual cohesiveness and made me laugh once or twice.

12/26/07  2:15pm

Well, it appears Cartoon Dump will have plenty of material for the coming year!

12/26/07  2:31pm

Yes, but they still have six long, long weeks.

12/26/07  3:38pm

Hilariously bad!

Homer: YIKES! That Zelda clip is nightmarish!

Mish: I wouldn’t doubt once someone over at AS sees this they’ll try to use it as a bumper or something…

12/26/07  3:39pm
Hannah says:

I don’t mean to be immature but… “Simba’s” nose… oh gosh, I can’t stop laughing at it.
I couldn’t even watch the whole thing!

chris says:

wait a minute is this a game or a movie for ps2?If thats the cinema at the begining i dont think I would get past the first half of the movie.

Richard says:

Wow! It’s worse than waterboarding!!

12/26/07  5:15pm
AdrianC says:

If you’re a parent, you must despise your child if you give him or her this atrocity.

I’ve seen some bad visuals and heard some awful voices in video games but this is some worst of both I have ever encountered.

Phoenix Games’s website claims they can make their games in 3-5 months as opposed to 18 months; I think it shows. In fact, it feels like they spent 3-5 weeks on it.

12/26/07  6:10pm
Eero says:

They used to trick gullable parents into buying these astrocious cheap copies of classic disney movies on dvd in our local malls in Finland. The dvds all had slightly more attractive covers but were all created (and voiced) as badly and often featured the same characters. We bought quite a few of them for fun.
I don’t think they sell them anymore though since most dvds are so cheap nowadays..

12/26/07  6:46pm
erik says:

this is one of the funniest things i have ever seen! looking beyond the quality of animation and acting and story, it makes me laugh so hard because i can only think about the people who made this doing it seriously! if i was on a project like this i couldnt help but laugh the entire time! i say: good job to those brave souls who put this together. way to go!

12/26/07  8:09pm

I detect Russian voice actors.

12/26/07  8:23pm

They truly are the masters of unlocking.

(/geeky gamer joke)

12/26/07  8:29pm
doug holverson says:

Make me think of those cartoon parodies within the cartoon in the Simpsons. The ones that aren’t Itchy & Scratchy.

So whatever happened to the Happy Little Elves?

12/26/07  8:48pm

Oh, god. This is a joke, right?

I dunno *where* this came from (Even Japan can’t make a game as bad as this, even if they wanted to!), but this is just as bad, if not worse, than the South Korean anime ripoffs (the horrible English versions by the ever-shady Joseph Lai are available at Wal-Mart), which range from awful to unintentionally hilarious (each of Lai’s English versions use footage from maybe 3 different films at once! One moment, you’re seeing a blatantly Frankensteined rip-off of a Japanese super-robot, much like a cheap imitation toy from Taiwan, and the next, you’re watching a TRON rip-off! I dunno how the South Koreans got away with all this)!

I mean, seriously. Is this “game” for real? :)

12/26/07  9:24pm
GeeVee says:

Bad enough for a summer live-action re-make.

12/26/07  9:34pm
yvette kaplan says:

Ha! I’ll go out on a limb here– cause I have to agree with Jason M and Erik– except for the “serious” part– I’d swear this was completely deliberate– all awfulness giddily intentional. And sheesh, I’ve seen worse! Happily, this is merely oddly good-natured silliness. No pretense at brilliance. A-OK with me! : )

12/26/07  9:42pm
El says:

Well, looking at the Phoenix Games website, it looks like most of their “games” are really activity packs featuring a “cartoon movie” and a couple of activities like colouring and matching games or puzzles. Not a bad idea for wee ones, but pretty pathetically executed. Although, they do bill themselves as “The Only European Super Budget Publisher” (!) so perhaps those of us on a ’super budget’ should appreciate the effort?

My favourite game is absolutely, no question, Son of the Lion King. Not only do they rip off Disney characters, but they reuse them. Because you save even MORE time that way.

Chris Sobieniak says:

Homer J. Simpson says: That is pretty bad, but if you want to experience some real horror, have a look at this animation from an old Legend of Zelda CD-I game from the early 90s…

Those have had made their rounds in recent years. There’s an interesting story as to how those were made in the first place, but I can redirect the rest of you here to find out!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CD-i_games_based_on_The_Legend_of_Zelda_series

Similarly, there was also a CD-I game for Super Maro Bros. as well (Hotel Mario), though it’s animation isn’t as bad as the Zelda games, but often is lumped in as “YouTube Poop” fodder by those that love producing those remixed videos on YouTube. Usually, anything that is deemed bad, campy or downright scary by the majority of internet geeks is often seen in these MovieMaker compilations (rather see more bad 80’s cartoons in the mix like Rubik the Amazing Cube or perhaps Popeye & Son).

Mark N says: My favorite part was the random dog playing the drums to cut into the next scene. The voices and running scenes were hilarious.

While this was the first time I saw the visuals a couple days ago, the cover and name was something I came across when I heard of this game off Usenet a couple years ago. I guess it only got attention online after these clips showed up. According to the Wiki entry for Phoenix Games, while they’re based out of the UK, they have their games developed down in The Netherlands. It shouldn’t be too obvious all the voices in this game is probably done by a single person there. I get the impression he was the only guy in that office who knew English somewhat fluently and they used him anyway. The so-called song that is performed during the soccer match is obviously Dutch, but somehow mixed terribly where a grown-up voice is drowning out voices of a children’s chorus I’ve read. The music throughout most of it sounds like a few seconds of background music looped from a particular scene they used to cover over what was probably the original audio of the game/movie that had dialogue in another language (as if they didn’t have the original elements to use, a sound of a ball being bounced can be heard constantly during these).

chris says: …wait a minute, is this a game or a movie for ps2? If thats the cinema at the begining i dont think I would get past the first half of the movie.

From what I’ve read, the game is nothing more than coloring pages and picture puzzles with these movie/cut-scene stuff shown in between. It’s really low!

Corey K. says: Those with a limited amount of time to gawp and giggle over this are advised to skip right to Part 4, which is only a minute and a half long and yet manages to encapsulate everything wrong with this puppy.

Wow.That was a total letdown, if you were that naive to wonder who’d win this crap-fest!

Floyd Bishop says: Yes, but they still have six long, long weeks.

In that time alone you could probably produce three South Park episodes and they’ll still stand out far better than this garbage! Really, that ending felt like they either ran out of ideas or time.

AdrianC says: If you’re a parent, you must despise your child if you give him or her this atrocity.

My mom would’ve bought it anyway! This is like those DVDs of giant robot fake anime that Wal-Mart had last year for a buck! Those gave many a laugh for their incomprehensible scritps, lackluster voiceacting, swiped character and mechanical designs from real Japanese cartoons like Gundam or Macross, and very clunky animation.

I’ve seen some bad visuals and heard some awful voices in video games but this is some worst of both I have ever encountered.

Such disregard for proper lip sync and timing to boot! It’s like this guy had a hard time voicing everything at once on this.

Phoenix Games’s website claims they can make their games in 3-5 months as opposed to 18 months; I think it shows. In fact, it feels like they spent 3-5 weeks on it.

You would think that after watching this! Practically a half-fast, unfinished knock-off of “Crazy Taxi”….

There’s always a few small-time companies out there that’ll do anything for a quick buck! If it doesn’t happen in the states, it could happen anywhere. Supposedly this game in particular was also spotted on shelves at Kmart stores in Australia, since the guy who posted this clips of got it there. We might never have to see anything like this over here unless some fly-by-nite startup company out of Worcester, MA doesn’t look to wanting to pick up whatever they could get their hands on to sell at cheapo prices at a big box near you!

Ceaser says:

The entire thing reminds me Osamu Tezuka’s Astro Boy cartoon, in the funny way.

Yes, this is the worst looking game I’ve ever seen. The biggest question is, where is the game part!? When do I get to play me some Animal World Soccer!?

Speaking of Animation based games, a Harvey Birdman game, which is more or less an interactive cartoon, in the good way, is coming out soon. Check check it? Maybe?

Richard says:

Doug Holverson is on to something - anyone remember the Simpsons episode with the Mary Poppins parody? where the parody (Shary Bobbins) claims that she is original…just like Rickey Rouse and Monald Muck!

Yeah. It is great!

Notice how all their games are rated for ages 3 and up. If you let your child play a videogame at age 3, you should be forced to sit through these crapfests along with your kid.

Haha. I think I’d probably like this better than what the next generation of John K. zombies are going to produce.

I mean really, this is accidentally brilliant. Which may in fact be the only kind of brilliant.

Wow, I actually remember auditioning for one of those “Zelda” games back when I was living in Boston in the early 90s, just after college. bwaaaah ! you’ve made my day gone bad!

this doesn’t look like like disney!, you said it looked like disney characters! this is way beyond that!

I saw the company was dutch,I know people always joke about the fact that the people from holland are being cheap,
and this was really cheap!
but this this not an example for all dutchies, really we’ve got some nice and decent people over here. and i don’t know these guys.

” Shoot…shoot…shoooooooot…”
“Goal, goal, goooooaal.”
Patrick Warburton has nothing on this guy’s passionate performance.
I truly loved the cost effective use of “cel-jiggling” to give the illusion of lush, fully animated motion.
Kudos to you, Phoenix Games!
Well played.

Those, I believe, are cheap “animated” movies by a German “studio” named Dingo Pictures. They sell in Europe to unsuspecting parents, who think, those are their kids favourite Disney films. As you see in the above link, they have other fake Disney- and Non-Disney-Movies to offer.

God, this is BIGGER than we expected!

Having noticed the origins of “Animal Soccer World (under the German title: “Fußballmeisterschaft der Tiere”), it’s interesting noticing how much the audio makes sense now that it doesn’t have that constant looped BGM and there’s ACTUAL voices, still, it’s a terribly cheap and stupid cartoon! :-)

What got me was the character modeling ripoffs: in addition to the Lion King cast, I recognized Bagheera from the Jungle Book, Pongo from 101 Dalmatians, and Stiletto from Danger Mouse. And that’s just from hopping around part 1. Talk about phoning it in!

12/30/07  9:06pm

The person who recorded that video also bought other Phoenix Games. And apparently they really are THAT cheap, it’s not some brilliant joke. Which I kind of like, actually, because it adds to their legend. Here’s another one of their cartoon titles. This one actually features real animation in it….. kinda. But you’ll soon find it has many of the same problems as Animal Soccer World.
