Bad News: A Marvin Martian Movie
by jerry
July 30, 2008 7:55 am

Variety is reporting that Warner Bros. is developing a live action/CG feature film starring Marvin the Martian. Alcon Entertainment (Racing Stripes, Dude Where’s My Car) is planning a Christmas themed family film around the character, who first appeared in Haredevil Hare (1948) directed by Chuck Jones.

This sounds brilliant.
The team involved should be given as much money as they need to make this epic.
I for one, am looking forward to it.

07/30/08  8:11am
FP says:

Very weird decision. Will the DUCK DODGERS continuity be ignored? Who thinks Marvin can carry a whole feature?

07/30/08  8:21am
top cat james says:

“Where’s the ‘kaboom’?”

That will be the sound of people running for the exits anywhere this abomination is going to be playing.

07/30/08  8:39am
P.C. Unfunny says:

Marvin can’t even hold a 7 minute cartoon by himself. He’s strictly a reaction character, someone like Bugs or Daffy has to fight him.

07/30/08  8:45am
tom says:

I’m pulling for Martin Lawrence or Steve Carell. Here’s hoping for another Grinch! (Fingers crossed!)

07/30/08  8:50am
Felch Xhabo says:

“Dude, Where’s My Integrity?” coming up next, in Imax 3D.

07/30/08  9:16am

already from hearing this brief description this is going to be the worst bastardized looney tunes adventure yet. why you gotta ruin a character like that?

07/30/08  9:16am
Kevin says:

…I’m getting that sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach after hearing this…Why can’t the powers to be at WB get it right with making new Looney Tunes, instead of one disaster after another. P.C. unfunny is 100% correct, Marvin is not a lead character at all…

07/30/08  9:26am
Tissa Tack says:

God, this is like the equivalent to a Barney Rubble feature film.

07/30/08  9:48am

Although it doesn’t sound good at all, I think is good that at least they are focusing in specific characters instead of trying to include the whole cast in a film, like the previous ones.

07/30/08  9:57am

Message from Marvin: Everyone’s negativity makes me SO angry!!!

07/30/08  10:07am
John A says:

Now wait a minute, that Barney Rubble is some actor!

07/30/08  10:07am
Richard says:

“Isn’t that lovely?”

NO!

07/30/08  10:12am
revned says:

Actually Tissa, it’s more like a feature film starring the Great Gazoo.

07/30/08  10:26am
Tissa Tack says:

revned–> Totally agree with you there.

07/30/08  10:38am

Marvin the Martian is a great character. The character Marvin the Martian was created by the late Maurice Noble, a truly great and extraordinary artist. The Daily Variety report of the production attributed the creation of Marvin, incorrectly, I believe, to Chuck Jones.

07/30/08  10:54am

Maybe they’ll make something along the lines of INVADER ZIM.

I at least hope Marvin himself is animated.

07/30/08  11:08am

“The character Marvin the Martian was created by the late Maurice Noble”

Maurice Noble didn’t work on Haredevil Hare–he wasn’t even a member of Chuck’s unit at that point.

Marvin was indeed created by Chuck Jones with Michael Maltese contributing the classic tag lines and the infamous Q-36 Explosive Space Modulator.

07/30/08  11:09am
Gobo says:

The idea of a Marvin the Martian feature doesn’t scare me half as much as a CHRISTMAS-themed Marvin the Martian feature. Lordy.

07/30/08  11:13am
Graham says:

Oye….

07/30/08  11:35am
Saturnome says:

“The idea of a Marvin the Martian feature doesn’t scare me half as much as a CHRISTMAS-themed Marvin the Martian feature”

Why, Marvin is red and green! Where’s the problem, it’s so perfect!

Seriously I’ll wait until some trailer or something comes up, it made me curious at least. It’s obviously something not aimed at any of us around here.

07/30/08  1:40pm
madmind says:

Will they be able to pull off a 90-minute story which doesn’t ruin the character we love?

Looking at the other Looney Tunes movies and the portfolio of Alcon Entertainment I highly doubt it.

07/30/08  2:39pm
Glorious Kyle says:

So what are the chances of a new and original animated short film playing before this movie? I’d say slim to none- I doubt anyone involved in the decision to make this movie could be that clever.

07/30/08  2:47pm

That makes me ANGRY. Very angry indeed.

07/30/08  3:23pm

…but, will kids nowadays even know who Marvin is? When was the last time Looney Tunes got decent airtime? (Emphasis on decent.)

07/30/08  3:44pm
Zekey says:

worst movie of 09/10
place all bets

07/30/08  3:51pm
TheAnimator says:

What the heck?

07/30/08  4:26pm
zavkram says:

I guess Jim Carrey (or maybe Mike Myers?) should keep his calendar open for the next few months… that and he should take a really hot bath so that he can fit into Marvin’s clothes.

07/30/08  4:45pm
Fausto says:

DEAR GOD WHY?! Have they learned nothing from the hideousness that is the Garfield movies?!

07/30/08  5:04pm
Andrew says:

It already sounds bad, but as always, we’ll have to wait and see.

07/30/08  5:24pm

There was a time when one of the only good things to be said about the Looney Tunes after the turn of the millenium is “at least noone has converted them into CGI like the Disney characters or Popeye”. I wish we could go back to saying that.

07/30/08  5:36pm
duck_dodgers says:

Maybe a Duck Dodgers movie with Marvin & K-2???

A movie from the Tv serie?

The Return of Duck Dodgers serie in form of Movie (ala Futurama)???

Only God’s know!

07/30/08  7:18pm
Gobo says:

Actually, if I were a betting man, I’d guess this is going to be something like “Marvin Steals Christmas” — in which he zaps Santa and has to be shown the spirit of the season by the Looney Tunes gang, the actual stars of the show — and goes direct to DVD.

07/30/08  7:44pm
Roberto says:

I am a big fan of Marvin, but he seems like and odd choice. I’m also worried about the Xmas theme cause it could get really sappy and Looney Tunes are not about that. I’m kind of curious in a way, but why can’t they do a whole animated movie instead of throwing some human actors there? Space Jam and Back In Action are not masterpieces but their most offensive stuff is always in the life-action segments.

07/30/08  7:50pm

“[The plot is about] Marvin coming to Earth to destroy Christmas but being prevented from doing so when he’s trapped in a gift box.” How much time did it take a highly-paid exec to come up with this five-minute short cartoon starring the Grinch?
It’s not only out of character for Marvin, it’s hard to see how any more window dressing can be added to it without feeling like ballast.

Unless the point is that after he’s boxed up, he’s given to some adoring little kid as a toy or pet, at which point his efforts to conquer the world from captivity play as an episode of PINKY, ELMYRA AND THE BRAIN—not coincidentally, another example of WB execs fixing what wasn’t broken and effectively killing interest in a successful brand.
John Paul Cassidy’s Invader ZIM comparison strikes me as the only way to make this project a success, and even then it would feel derivative.

Jerry, nice to see someone remembers the days when he was simply Marvin Martian—before marketing gave him his “the”.

07/30/08  9:15pm
Autumn says:

This makes me very angry. Very angry indeed.

I do not approve of this WB. NOT AT ALL.

Why…who are these people that allow these things to happen?

07/30/08  9:26pm
Mr. Semaj says:

Does anyone have an Illudium PU-36 Explosive Space Modulator to spare?

Someone needs to teach these Time Warner suits that “no” does NOT mean “yes”. >:(

07/30/08  10:19pm
RAB SMITH says:

BUGS says: ‘RUN!—–or you’ll be up to your armpits in bad merchandise spin-offs!’

07/30/08  11:37pm
Satorical says:

Happy Birthday, Jesus! Hope ya like crap!

07/31/08  5:54am
Doc Gamble says:

None of this will matter when “Bazooka Joe, Bubble
Rapper” opens in theaters and blows everything else away.

07/31/08  8:34am
Richard says:

Satorical says:
“Happy Birthday, Jesus! Hope ya like crap!”

Nice Norm MacDonald reference.

07/31/08  8:50am
Keith Paynter says:

What next…Charlie Dog? Conrad Cat?

Movie meetings have de-evolved to the vintage Monty Python sketch with Graham Chapman as the movie mogul pitching ideas to all his “yes men”. “SPLUNGE!!”

07/31/08  12:12pm
Kyle says:

Marvin was always my favorite loony tune, but this cant turn out too well. and Christmas? why? because he’s red and green? come on.

07/31/08  1:55pm
Jo says:

After Space Jam, Back In Action, Loonatics, Baby Looney Tunes, the very existence of Lola Bunny, etc.. I’m just exhausted from being enraged at Warner Bros. Really, I don’t have the energy to be anything fiercer than bemused by this news.

08/1/08  8:50am
Larry T says:

“[The plot is about] Marvin coming to Earth to destroy Christmas but being prevented from doing so when he’s trapped in a gift box.”

Guess what will be on sale all over the shelves at Toys R Us in December.

Space Jam and Back In Action are not masterpieces, but their most offensive stuff is always in the life-action segments.

I totally agree with you there. The animated segments are quite entertaining. Too bad this movie won’t be ‘animated’. But I guess all those 3-D models from “Wall-E” have to be used again somewhere so that they can pay for that piece of dredge.

Didn’t anybody at the idea pitching sessions say, “But I don’t WANT to see Marvin rendered in 3-D. He’s fine the way he is.”

08/1/08  12:49pm
Rick says:

From David:
“There was a time when one of the only good things to be said about the Looney Tunes after the turn of the millenium is “at least noone has converted them into CGI like the Disney characters or Popeye”. I wish we could go back to saying that.”

I guess you haven’t seen Duck Dodgers in the 3rd Dimension? Daffy, Marvin and K9 were CG for this. 1996.

08/1/08  1:14pm

So…are they casting Verne Troyer as Marvin and Mike Myers as Gossamer?

08/1/08  4:05pm
Eric says:

The world is coming to an end. This is definitive proof! They lost me as soon as they said “live action”. Garfield anyone? Underdog?

08/2/08  3:55pm
Chris says:

This is gonna suck…{No offness to anyone} But they cannot do this without Bugs Bunny or Duck Dodgers

08/3/08  6:52am
DavidMcG says:

Hey, it provides jobs to animators.

08/6/08  1:46pm
Eric says:

It DOES provide job’s to animators but that’s a VERY thin silver lining. If would be nice if an animator’s time and creativity could be used for something more likely to succeed.

08/27/08  6:55pm
Happymiser says:

Marvin the Martian was created by Michael Maltese and Chuck Jones. Chuck Jones directed many of Maltese’s characters. Jones referred to Maltese as his favorite writer. Maltese either created or co-created such characters as Road Runner, Pepe Le Pew, Deputy Dog, Michigan J. Frog and the Duck Dodgers version of Daffy Duck. He wrote many Bugs Bunny cartoons such as the great “What’s Opera Doc?” He was the lead writer who won an academy award for the Pepe Le Pew cartoon “For Scentamental Reasons.” He wrote the song the “Michigan Rag.” Michael Maltese should be a household name like the great Chuck Jones when it comes to the field of animation.

Oh no.

I think that’s the only thing that can sum this up. Those two words. “Oh” and “No.” One followed right by the other.

Oh no.
