Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs Update

Last weekend, Sony’s Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs surprised everybody by grossing $24.6 million and staying atop the North American box office for a second week in a row. More impressively, the film declined only 19% from its opening weekend, putting it behind just Taken and Coraline for the smallest drop of any new movie in 2009. A number of artists who worked on the film have been posting stuff from it on their blogs. But how can this be? There aren’t any celebrity voices or “wacky/ironic” cultural references? People must have just wandered into the theaters by mistake.
Great job! I just saw the movie last Wednesday and I really enjoyed it. Good to see that people went to see that instead of Fame (a remake of a film that didn’t need to be made in the first place).
My whole family really enjoyed it. I’m glad to see it doing well. It’s so energetic and fun.

The cartooning style shown here is great! I really wish I had the skills to produce a cartoon in that style. I wonder if that is water color, or some other form of medium used. Being a freelance graphic designer , I am really into the trends today, and one of those is texture. Even with this cartoon and the medium used to produce it, there is texture in there. It’s great! I need to figure out how to get those effects on the computer!
Best of all, it stood up to Megan Fox!
I haven’t yet seen the movie and frankly wasn’t terribly keen before its release(just didn’t grab me, especially after the trailer), but a feature story artist I greatly respect asserted that the Cloudy “art of” book is the nicest-looking one he’s ever seen. What he said about it specifically indicates a refreshingly focused attitude towards the artists who worked on the film from the powers that be. Now I’m piqued and excited and eager to see it.

Cloudy was the most fun I’ve had seeing a film in a long time. I welcome its success.
I can’t be the first to notice this: Robert Crumb did a story called “Meatball!” in one of the first “Zap Comix”. It rained meatballs. Probably about 1967. Here, look:

I also enjoyed the film quite a bit (especially in IMAX 3-D), the lead characters weren’t too bland and great character work from Mr. T and Bruce Campbell (hey, they’re celebrities in my book). As an MST3K fan, it was nice to see a visual nod to the show in the hallway to the lab’s elevator, and I liked the fact that some of the humour was pitched to adults without being too racy or grotesque.
Mind you, I couldn’t help but think how bad that island must have smelled with that giant pile of rotting food on the outskirts of town. I’m guessing the ratbirds held the seagulls at bay.
