  • Spencer

Cute, but I feel like it’s missing something….

    • T Kelling

      70 additional mins?

  • Gerard de Souza

Beautiful color, music and animation. I give this trailer 5 stars. ;)

  • E. L. Kelly II

This scene’s got all the prerequisites for a non-revolutionary, crowd-pleasing 3-D animated animal flick: vivid color; cute, cheerful characters; scenes that telegraph the ‘differently-abled’ character’s woes compared to his peers.
There’d better be something revealed in later trailers that makes “Rio” different. I like it enough to exclaim, “Cool!” to the wonderful image on my computer screen, and not to hate on the movie one bit, but my easily distracted mind can find different things to part with my money about. Unless….
that music reminds me: could there be Timbalada in the music track offering – somewhere?! (People who know, fill me in: does that group still exist?)
In that case, I’ll have to see it!

  • lookin’ good!

  • Elaborated sillyness. The only thing missing would be the Aracuan bird. I’m going to like this film! (Trailer runs here since last summer.)

    • Risa

Agreed^^ Thats what I thought too!

  • doop

Cool, pretty festive, and I wanted to see more… a good sign.

  • Erin Siegel

Oh man I just LOVE how they did the parrot faces.

Though, since I own parrots, I find it REALLY odd to see a “baby” parrot that has puppy proportions rather than the naked bug-eyed raptor things they really are at that age.

Then again few people outside of the bird-loving community find that cute.

    • Personally I think that naked raptor baby is way cuter than the film’s design! Of course hermit crabs are my favorite animal, so I’m already inclined to find the cuteness in weirdness.

      • Erin Siegel

Yeah even to people who think they LOOK ugly, I’ve shown vids of baby birds to, they always think they ACT cute. Like they ain’t sure where to play their feet and look at everything like a newborn baby would, astonishment, like everything is made of magic.

      • swac

We’re parrot owners as well, and loved this clip (there’s parrot paraphenalia all over our apartment, it’s like the Enchanted Tiki Room).

Speaking of which, I wonder if Disney is kicking itself for not adapting the Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Room into a feature.

  • Jorge Garrido

    1. Among the most appealing and cute character designs I’ve seen so far in CG.

    2. The dancing and joy expressed in the clip is hypnotic and wonderful, like those old 1930s “everybody dance” cartoons, but more specific to this story.

    3. The individual gags themselves within that dancing structure are great! The eggs “that hatch and then dance immediately” gag is perfectly timed!

  • Wow, looks amazing and I have a big grin on my face the entire time. The animation is particularly stunning.

And no, I don’t work for Blue Sky and I personally find their work to be just decent.

  • Uli Meyer

Hah! The Brazilians will go nuts for those Lambada-dancing birds. Sweet.

    • you mean to say “Samba”.

      • Uli Meyer

        I meant to say “Samba”.

  • And…Now what you say?

  • Some Girl

I thought this was very enjoyable! Catchy tune as well!

  • Great animation for sure. I doubt I will see it at the cinema but hats off to the animators and designers… and maybe a posthumous tip of the cap to buzby berkley too

  • paitz

i guess blue sky dont want anyone outside the animation community to know its exist if all the time they displayed as “the creators of ice age” without mention thair name.

    • 2011 Toddler

Once they trump Ice Age with a film that is much better and more critically acclaimed, THEN they will drop that tagline.

It will change to whatever THAT film will be! Don’t you feel better now?

  • d

I think it’s a happy teaser and it created a good feeling, at least to me. I like that, I like happy things. I like other things too, but they come from other places. Just as much as I wouldn’t go to a butcher to get myself an ice cream ;)
I’ll go see it. I want to see it now…
    As always, thanks for sharing.

  • It’s… a musical?

  • sam

this is going to be fun!

  • The Scarlet Pumpernickel

The first two minutes… or a trailer?

  • No complaints…..looks fun…Blue Sky really knows how to bring some nice visuals.
Haha Kinda got a ‘Tiki Room’ vibe at the beginning

  • I heavily look forward to this film. I’ve always enjoyed Blue Sky’s non-Ice Age films. Judging from the trailers and this clip, I feel Blue Sky is one of the best CG character animators in the industry.

  • This looks like a lot of fun. I love the Busby Berkley-style choreography.

  • wait so this wasn’t just made up for the Orange Wednesdays ad?

  • Yul

A decent updating of “The Three Caballeros”, minus the surprise element of creative shock. So when will Blue Sky bring us “Bronze Age”? And that dance looked more like the samba than the lambada to me but then I have no legs.

  • Toonio

Finally the Brazilians will have a piece of animation to really relate to ;)

  • Being a Brazilian, I did really enjoyed this, specially the birds dancing to the Samba music, just perfect. They really did their home work.
The character designs are great too and they were done by my friend Sergio Pablos, one of the best.
I can not wait to see the movie.

  • SEE THIS WARNER BROS! THAT’S HOW YOU’RE SUPPOSED TO DO IT! I’m actually looking forward to this.

  • 2011 Toddler

So……. is this a musical, or not?

  • AaronSch

That was a joyous couple of minutes. I am eager to see more.

  • Gobo

Blue Sky’s got a brilliant knack for appealing designs, beautiful backgrounds, and lovely art… and also an unfortunate habit of frenetic caffeinated editing and camera moves that never lets the viewer take a breather and just enjoy what they’re seeing.

That said, the birds look great here, the colors are gorgeous, and I’ll see this in a heartbeat.

  • lola

Cute designs, great animation, and wonderful dancing. As usual I’ll enjoy the visuals but I doubt the writing will be anything special. As a few people have said before there just always seems to be something.. missing?

Also @ Erin Siegel: I think that would have been so hilarious and awesome if they designed the babies like that. They ARE cute in a really cartoonishly awkward way.

  • Looks nice. Love the dancing and wing animation, wow!

  • It’s… a musical? Or is this just for the trailer? I guess it makes perfect sense that birds would be singing all the time in everyday life.

I like the Busby Berkeley birds, plus “Busby Berkeley Birds” is very fun to say.

It looks all right. It looks cute. It doesn’t look particularly interesting. I don’t think anything about this film is going to surprise anyone. I might see it if someone really wanted me to go to a movie with them.

  • Matt Sullivan

Looks cute, but predictable ( as most animal themed cartoons tend to be. Again, I’ll have to see it before I judge it. )

Animation filmmakers should start thinking outside the box. I mean, it’d be horrible and sick but I’d be more interested in seeing a film about a cute parrot who just so happens to be a serial killer.

I know. Stupid. But it’d be DIFFERENT.

    • optimist

Predictable? Do you mean how the birds move? How they’re designed? Because they fly in the jungle and live in trees? There’s no story to be predicted here in this excerpt-it’s a purely visual musical dance number.

Using your example of thinking outside the box-wouldn’t that be being different for no reason other than…being different? Maybe such a mashup would be terrific for a 6 minute short, but for a feature? Go way off the rails with mix n match and it just seems gimmicky.

While there might be nothing new under the sun if a “same old story” is done beautifully it’s always a treat in my book(whether the entire 100 minutes of Rio does remains to be seen).

  • Silence Dogood

    Looks fun so far.
The baby bird not being able to fly feels pretty cliche, though..

  • Also a Brasilian, they definitely got the Samba dancing bang on. I hope this turns out to be a fun and memorable film. Really crossing my fingers for it to be a musical…

  • Jabberwocky

It’s very pretty, but not something I’d watch a whole movie for. Also I’m not totally sold on the huge-eyes-and-heads of the birds, it seems a little too exaggerated.

The music was very cool though. I will consider getting the soundtrack.

  • Maxwell A

Looking fantastic to me. Pretty inspiring the quality of animation they are getting out of those birds. Kudos Blue-Sky, look forward to the feature.

  • Scarabim

Really beautiful, but somehow I don’t feel eager to see this movie. I’d have to know more about the plot. But of course I hope it performs great at the box office.

  • I have to admit….I look forward to seeing this in theaters.

If only George Lopez wasn’t voicing that Toucan!, darn it!

    • 2011 Toddler

Better an original character than a fast-talking mouse on caffine.

      • Who is the fast talking mouse on caffeine, the one from “Over the Hedge”?

i just hate the George Lopez choice because he is american-mexican…not brazilian, he doesn’t even speak spanish, how can you relate that to a brazilian .*(on top of that:brazilians speak portuguese)

  • Ron

I bet the character designers had a BLAST working on this film. I know I would have. It really shows in their work. You can tell they were having fun. It’s reminiscent of “Saludos Amigos” and “the Tiki Room” and several other elements. I hope the rest of the movie is this good.

  • Looks and feels like a beautifully done commercial for a travel agency or gum

  • ASaurous

This totally looks fun and cute. Yeah, it’s easy to see how it could deadpool into a bunch of cliches, but I’m going to give it the benefit of the doubt. It’s one of the few films this year that isn’t going to be a sequel!

That aside, I’ve noticed that, coincidence or not, this film has a lot of similarities to the cancelled Pixar film Newt. That film is about the last two blue-footed newts on earth, one who is pampered and one who is street smart, who will need to mate to save their species but don’t get along at all. And then this is about the last two blue macaws on earth, one pampered and one street smart…isn’t that kind of odd?
Is this a coincidence, or did one studio copy the other’s idea?

  • steve w.

    Tiki Room on steriods.

  • A very, very jolly, exciting sequence.
Anyone with anything negative to say about it is a dimwit.

  • Some Girl

If anyone is interested, there is a nice song on the movie site as well. :)
This looks great and I can’t wait!
Hopefully the trailers in the future don’t give much away, bit so far , BlueSky hasn’t given me any dissapointments yet. I especially loved Robots.

  • Kyle Maloney

I think Bluesky is the only 3D studio capable of competing with Pixar at the moment in terms of talent. I have more respect for them than Dreamworks. They just need to work on original properties like Rio rather than Ice Age sequels and adapting Dr Seuss books. (I know, they only did one, point being its not original) something that will allow them to branch out more. Between the ice age movies and the scrat shorts they must be pretty burnt out on being forced to recycle the same thing over and over.

  • Lindsay

Pretty loud way to open a film – in more ways than one! I liked how they used a sprinkling of different bird species (especially the frigatebirds drumming their pouches), but the parrots looked too similar. They just re-used Blu and Jewel’s character models and threw different colors on them. :/

Can anyone transcribe the lyrics? I can catch some lines but not others…

  • Chris Matie

WHOA! Awesome music, super-cool animation, cute story, and the impressive credential of “Ice Age”…who could ask for anything more in an animated feature trailer? (And not just because I’m also a samba-loving gringo here in the States, either. This clip ROCKS!!! Plus, I can’t wait for the soundtrack!!!)

  • Beeing a brazilian I still prefer “Saludos Amigos” and “The Three Caballeros”.

  • akira

thanks for a preview with class
–not throwing in some crappy annoying american pop tune (Ice ice baby)
    –not pushing celebrity voice actors
–no cheap and cheesy one liners

i hope the rest of the movie is just half this good

  • Andrew Kieswetter

    It looks very promising.

  • Bruce Wright

WOW!!!! Wonderful! Had be grinning from ear to ear. I can’t wait to see that flying work in 3d. It looks tailor made for 3d. LUSH! Beautiful. SNARK FREE!!!

    ME LOVE!

  • Looks nice!

  • burkiss

Wow. That looks really, really good. Beautiful design, great animation, I love it. I can’t wait to take my kid.

  • Alissa

Very, very pretty! I felt rather hypnotized by the dancing, as it should be.

Let’s hope the story lives up to the visuals.

  • Really like it – a lot more appeal than the Ice-Age trilogy. Amazing bird animation too – I personally think birds are hard to animate :S

  • Mac

I haven’t been able to stop re-watching this since I first saw it last night. I think everything I like the most about music, animation, colour and wildlife has been combined in this clip. Pure perfection.

  • Sherrie

I was surprised this is a musical, but I like the opening song!

  • Keegan

Is any one else turned on by the lack of realistic textures?

That’s basically what is making me like this movie more than Rango.

Rango looks way to realistic to be appealing.
