For Your Consideration

baby oscar
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has released the names of the 12 films submitted (and potentially qualified) for a Best Animated Feature Film award this year.

“Alvin and the Chipmunks
“Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters
“Bee Movie
“Beowulf
“Meet the Robinsons
“Persepolis
“Ratatouille
“Shrek the Third
“The Simpsons Movie
“Surf’s Up
“Tekkonkinkreet
“TMNT

Only three will be nominated. Care to take any guesses?

11/8/07  2:17pm
Mr. Semaj says:

Meet the Robinsons
Ratatouille
The Simpsons Movie

Winner: Ratatouille

11/8/07  2:25pm
Jim says:

Beowulf
Ratatouille
Simpsons

Ratatouille for the win. If not, I move to the midwest and open a fruit stand.

11/8/07  2:31pm
Tom Pope says:

Ratatouille. The Simpsons. Persepolis.

Winner: Ratatouille.

11/8/07  2:40pm
:: smo :: says:

although i’m not sure how good of a chance it has, i would LOVE to see “Persepolisâ€? up there. other than that my guesses would be Ratatouille
The Simpsons Movie.

11/8/07  2:40pm

Persepolis
Ratatouille
The Simpsons Movie

winner: Persepolis

11/8/07  2:44pm
Dean Forrest says:

If the Chipmunk movie wins, we can all go ice skating in hell.

11/8/07  2:45pm
David says:

I would like to see:
Ratatouille
Surf’s Up
Persepolis

What will probably happen is:
Bee Movie
Beowulf
Ratatouille

After Happy Feet winning last year, I don’t have much confidence that the academy will do the right thing.

11/8/07  2:46pm
Jay says:

Ratatouille
Beowulf
Persepolis (or Simpsons Movie…)

Winner: Ratatouille

11/8/07  2:48pm
Pedro Nakama says:

NONE OF THE ABOVE

That’s what I always write on my Academy Ballot!

11/8/07  2:51pm
Ed says:

Surely that dung eating fetish movie ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks’ is gonna win the Oscar isn’t it?….hello, anyone there? - NURSE THE SCREENS!!!!………

11/8/07  2:51pm
Mukpuddy says:

If Alvin and the Chipmunks is up for it why isn’t somthing like Spiderman 3? WTF!

Surf’s Up
Ratatouille
The Simpsons Movie

Winner: Ratatouille

11/8/07  2:54pm

“Persepolis
“Ratatouille
“Surf’s Up

I agree with Mr. Semaj, the Winner: Ratatouille

11/8/07  2:54pm
Zekey says:

Aqua Teen Hunger Force
Beowulf
Alvin and the Chipmunks

Winner: Beowulf

11/8/07  3:01pm
mawnck says:

Ratatouille, Persepolis, Surf’s Up

Prsepolis wins. Animation geeks and Disney/PIXAR junkies (none of whom have seen it) are furious, but public refuses to panic.

Oh, and both Beowulf and the Chipmunks thing are declared ineligible under the new rules.

11/8/07  3:04pm

Ratatouille;
Persopolis;

plus one from among Beowulf; Meet the Robinsons; Shrek the Third and The Simpsons Movie.

11/8/07  3:05pm

This is a no-brainer:

RATATOUILLE

11/8/07  3:08pm
Bonnie says:

I’m amazed that this years 12 possible options of the best films for 2007 includes ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks’

It’s a sad sad world in which we live…

11/8/07  3:11pm

i would love to see Tekkonkinkreet get nominated but i doubt that will happen. i don’t know if the academy nominates that many foreign films for best animated feature or not but from what i’ve seen and remember from the past is that its normally big hollywood studios that usually get nominated. it should win in my opinion.

Ratatouille
Beowulf
Bee Movie

winner: Ratatouille

11/8/07  3:12pm
Dan says:

Surf’s up, Ratatouille, Beowulf (I haven’t seen it yet)

Winner: Surf’s up…Was extremely well animated, the water was beautiful, mockumentary style of filming was new and fresh, great characters and character designs, Extremely entertaining.

Runner Up: As much as I enjoyed Ratatouille the story structure is something that most of us can expect from Pixar. The animation is out of this world. The acting choices the animators made are genius, I could watch ratatouille with the sound off just too enjoy the animation. It is a great movie but just doesn’t have the appeal that Surf’s Up did.

Third: I have yet to see Beowulf, but it seems like it would get an award just because they tried to make it so realistic.

If I had to make another guess to replace Beowulf I would have to say The Simpson’s movie. Don’t really have a reason.

11/8/07  3:14pm
Bonnie says:

Oh yeah, the three…

Tekkonkinkreet
Simpsons
Persepolis

right, there isn’t anything else there… the rest is less than inspiring and don’t really do anything new (ok, the simpsons have been going for close to 20 years, they still rock!)

11/8/07  3:23pm
kasap says:

Persepolis
Ratatouille
Tekkon kinkreet

winner: Persepolis

11/8/07  3:27pm
red pill junkie says:

Rattatouille,
Simpsons,
Persepolis.

Winner? Duh! Rattatouille :-)

11/8/07  3:43pm
Animation Pimp says:

Persepolis should win hands down, which is why it won’t cause Academy voters are, primarily, tool lovers.

11/8/07  3:49pm
awd! says:

If Beowolf wins, I’m unleashing the robots.

11/8/07  3:55pm
Jorge Garrido says:

Ratatouille should win, but then again, Happy Feet won last year…

11/8/07  4:01pm
Kelly Tindall says:

Isn’t Ratatouille the best-reviewed movie of the year? Shouldn’t that go towards qualifying it for Best Picture? Not just Best Animated, but Best Picture?

The ghettoization of animation is complete.

11/8/07  4:11pm
EatRune says:

Ratatouille and the Simpsons movie . . . I haven’t seen any of the others, I wish “Paprika” was an option.

How can Alvin and the Chimpunks even be considered?

11/8/07  4:12pm
Adrian says:

- Ratatouille
- Persepolis
- Beowulf or Simpsons

I think Ratatouille should win but I have yet to see Persepolis and Beowulf so I reserve judgement for now.

11/8/07  4:13pm
Hannah says:

Persepolis
Ratatouille
and really either between Surf’s Up or Simpsons for the 3rd slot

And I’ll be rooting Ratatouille all the way. But I won’t be complaining if Perspolis wins. (I haven’t seen Surf’s Up to have an opinion of it yet)
Just as long as a mocap doesn’t win again, I think I’ll be okay.

11/8/07  4:17pm

Ratatouille
Meet The Robinsons (Wishful thinking though)
Persepolis

Winner…Ratatouille!
Though i have a soft corner for MTR and i would love for it to win! But Ratatouille is hard to beat with its overall amazing production quality.

11/8/07  4:22pm
Tony says:

My vote goes for these three:

“Ratatouille
“Surf’s Up
“Tekkonkinkreet

And I have yet to see Persepolis, but it’s probably up there, too.

Ratatouille will win, but I’d be very pleased to see either Tekkonkinkreet or Surfs Up to receive it.

11/8/07  4:30pm
Tim Drage says:

I’m guesing Ratatouille, (how could they not?) The Simpsons Movie, (it’s the simpsons!!) and Persepolis (token worthy and political option).

Tekkon Kinkreet would be nice, but I doubt it….

11/8/07  4:31pm
Chuck R. says:

Simpsons
Beowulf
Ratatouille

Jessica Simpson is selected to present the award, and can’t read “Ratatouille” from the card, so she blurts out the only name she can pronounce. The Academy in order to save her from humiliation, lets the announcement stand.

the winner:
The Simpsons.

11/8/07  4:33pm
Mig says:

Persepolis hope it wins
Ratatouille
The Simpsons Movie

11/8/07  4:34pm
Zubby says:

The nominations:
“Bee Movie
“Ratatouille
“The Simpsons Movie

The winner:
“Ratatouille

11/8/07  4:35pm

I would hopefully think Ratatouille & Persepolis were the two definite nominees on the list, with the third choice being a bit more difficult to choose. The Simpsons Movie would be the easiest choice out of the bunch, though.

As for films like TMNT, Chipmunks, Surf’s Up, Robinsons & Shrek the Third… I’d think they are less possible choices (with ATHF being the bottom). Since I have no clue what Tekkonkinkreet is, I can’t say anything about it. I can’t possibly vote for Beowulf, ever since last years Happy Feet SNAFU.

11/8/07  4:40pm

Ratatouille
Persepolis
The Simpsons Movie

I will go for either Persepolis or Ratatouille. They are more original than the Simpsons Movie. I would like to see TEKKONKINKREET nominated, but I have a shaky feeling about that. We are talking about an elitist film society.

11/8/07  4:48pm
Danielle says:

EatRune: I think Paprika made the qualification list last year (correct me if I’m wrong).

- Ratatouille
- Persepolis
- Simpsons

Winner: Persepolis

11/8/07  4:51pm
Bugsmer says:

Ratatouille
Bee Movie
Beowulf

11/8/07  4:52pm
Tom says:

Bee Movie
Beowulf
Ratatoille

Winner - Bee Movie so they can have Seinfeld on stage. They don’t want to favor Pixar, and Beowulf is a video game, the 80-year old youngsters on the board won’t vote for that! The only reason that Happy Feet got the nod was penguins, penguins, penguins!

11/8/07  4:54pm
louis says:

Persepolis
Ratatouille
Tekkon kinkreet

i am hoping the winner will be: Persepolis

11/8/07  5:00pm
John F says:

What I would like to see chosen:
Ratatouille
Tekkonkinkreet
Persepolis

What I bet is going to be chosen:
Ratatouille
The Simpsons Movie
Beowulf or Bee Movie

What I really hope isn’t going to be chosen:
Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film For Theaters
Alvin and The Chipmunks
Beowulf

11/8/07  5:07pm
Bry Bry says:

Persepolis
Ratatouille
The Simpsons Movie

My vote is Persepolis, but I have a feeling it will be Rataouille

11/8/07  5:08pm
Zep says:

Persepolis
Ratatouille
Surf’s Up or (more likely) Simpsons

Persepolis should almost certainly win, given the tastes of the membership.

Does anyone know why the Academy rules allow for no more than 3 in this category?

11/8/07  5:09pm
purin says:

Alvin and the Chipmunks? It’s a live action film with three animated main characters in it. Now, I don’t remember these things, but did any Harry Potter movies count for best animated film for Dobby or Buckbeak? As for Beowulf, it’s not really breaking new ground, is it? We’ve done the realistic human completely computer movie before (though not using the actors’ image). That was Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, which bombed because… of STORY! I’m the one person in the world who liked it, but I know it wasn’t enough of a Final Fantasy. Since it’s not the first it ideally should be judged more on its content than its looks.

Hopefully the content of the movies will count for something. This could mean that Bee Movie wins for funniness (haven’t seen it yet, but if you’re laughing you’re not exactly caring about the design of a film). Beowulf is probably amazing in 3D on a big screen, but, from the clips, it looks really boring when it’s not at its most exciting. Persepolis is the kind of movie that would catch critics’ eye for its story. Simpsons is the crowd pleaser that everyone knows.

I think Ratatouille deserves the award for not only looking good, but for being a good movie as a whole.

11/8/07  5:10pm
Bill says:

Ok, if Arthur and the Invisibles didn’t qualify for an animated feature, Beowulf sure as hell better not either…

Ratatouille
Meet the Robinsons
Simpsons

Ratatouille for the win.

11/8/07  5:10pm
mawnck says:

Paprika was eligible, but not nominated, last year.

The reason I think Persepolis is gonna take it where other artsy films have failed is that it has the added advantage of political cache. I mean, how wonderfully Hollywood-open-minded is it to vote for a terribly personal animated film by a liberated, funny and sarcastic Muslim woman? Why, it makes me feel better about myself just thinking about voting for it!

Also, it deserves to win, being a better movie than Ratatouille, but we all know how that goes.

11/8/07  5:15pm
Tube Socks McGee says:

Persepolis, Ratatouille, Beowulf.

I’d be happy if any of the three win. All equally deserving. Say what you want about mo-cap but Beowulf kicks ass.

11/8/07  5:16pm
Alberto says:

Persepolis
Ratatouille
Tekkonkinkreet

I’m being optomistic, though. If Alvin and the Chipmunks is nominated my respect for the academy will drop even lower.

Ratatouille will win fer’ sho’ I wasn’t even aware that Persepolis and Tekkonkinkreet was out of the festival circut and already on the American screens, i’ll have to look into that.

11/8/07  5:31pm

Ratatouille, Persepolis and The Simpsons Movie if I had to choose, but maybe they won’t take Persepolis as it’s already nominated in the foreign movie cathegory which I think it will win. So maybe the third place will be for Shrek The Third, Surf’s Up or Bee Movie. Or, if they have a really bad taste, Beowulf.

I’ll probably give the prize to Persepolis, but I think Ratatouille is going to win.

11/8/07  5:33pm
Paul K. says:

“Persepolis
“Ratatouille
“Tekkonkinkreet

and … Ratatouille with the win!

Mostly because Persepolis and Tekkonkinkreet are adaptations, I would argue that their printed counterparts are more engaging. Tekkonkinkreet is an awesome and thoughtful piece of cinema though….

Oh yeah, thanks for bringing up “Paprikaâ€? … (I gotta see that)– the trailer alone should qualify it for an academy award in comparison to Shrek, Surf, and Bee Movie…

11/8/07  5:45pm
Andrew says:

Ratatouille’s a shoe-in.

Meet the Robinsons may get nominated, but it just BARELY makes it past The Simpsons Movie or Shrek The Third.

My guilty hope is Paprika, even though I have a feeling it won’t get nominated.

11/8/07  5:51pm
Anne says:

Come on, Persepolis!!!

But even if it was Ratatouille….I’d settle for that.

11/8/07  5:57pm

Bee Movie
Beowulf
Simpsons

Winner = Simpsons

11/8/07  5:57pm

No guesses…but I’m just glad that Tekkonkinkreet is recognized up there, along with Persepolis and Ratatouille. I’m going to ignore the rest (save for The Simpson’s Movie).

11/8/07  6:24pm
Andre says:

I’d have to go with…..

TekkonKinkreet
Ratatouille
Shrek the Third [to confuse and befuddle us, like when Monster House got nominated. The others will be left in the wind, sadly. Though I kind of liked Shrek the Third.... you could also insert The Bee Movie or Surf's Up in there]

I’m gonna pick Ratatouille to win.

I also predict that Persepolis will get nominated for Best Foreign Film [isn't it one of France's entries?]

11/8/07  6:27pm
Sorry Guys says:

I hate motion capture but I have no doubt that Beowulf will win. It is not animation and it shouldn’t be on the list, I worked on Beowulf and I don’t even consider it animation. Ratatouille is the obvious should win. No, it’s going to win because the Academy votes politically.

The more live action you make a film the more they’d support it. It’s not just animators who vote, mostly it’s actors and directors of live action films. They don’t even see the films before they vote. Tony Curtis admitted that to the press. The fact that he got to keep his membership after that is beyond me. I have no doubt that most of the people who voted for Happy Feet had never seen the film.

Beowulf is going to win, not because it deserves to win, it has more of the politics behind it. The only way it wont win is if it has a bad box office, and that’s not going to happen.

BTW Kelly Tindall, the Academy created the category so that animated pictures wouldn’t compete against live action pictures for Best Picture.

11/8/07  6:49pm
David says:

Why only 3 can be nominated ? How’s that make sense ?

That said , here are the ones that should be nominated :

“Persepolis
“Ratatouille
“Surf’s Upâ€?

The all-around excellent Ratatouille is the obvious choice , but I would definitely cheer too if the 2D underdog Persepolis got the nod.
Surf’s Up was ignored at the box-office but was well made and deserves a nomination.

Ratatouille should be in the Best Picture group of 5 nominations.
I guess Beauty and the Beast’s nomination scared ‘em so bad that they made sure that would never happen again .

11/8/07  7:02pm
Kliph says:

I don’t know who will be nominated or who will win, but I do know one thing. I plan on remaking Persepolis using Alvin and the Chipmunks.

11/8/07  7:26pm
Don says:

People! Why even pretend?

We all know that the academy is going pick Beowolf because it’s new fangled technology. They don’t give a shit about story or artistic integrity.

After the Happy Feet fiasco, it’s a no brainer.

11/8/07  7:48pm

Simpsons, Ratatouille, Surf’s Up.

And the Oscar goes to… Ratatouille.

11/8/07  8:07pm
Chuck R. says:

Okay, stupid question. Everyone is rooting for Persepolis —have all of you seen it? It’s been released in Europe and various festivals, but doesn’t go wide in the US until December.

It has been entered for Best Foreign Film. Can it get nominated for both categories? I think last year, Michael Moore’s Farenheit 911 was disqualified for Best Picture because it was entered as a docu.

Also, for those who think artsy or Foreign films don’t have a chance, there was Spirited Away in 2002, and it beat Lilo and Stitch. the Triplets of Belleville was nominated the following year. I agree that the Academy doesn’t know jack about animation, making this the hardest category to predict.

11/8/07  8:13pm
Greg Chenoweth says:

I wouldlike to see the following films nominated:

Simpsons
Ratatouille
Meet The Robinsons

I hope Ratatouille wins the Oscar. Brad Bird is the most brilliant director in animation today.

Under no circumstances should “Alvin and the Chipmunks”, “Aqua Teen Hunger Force” or “Beowulf” be nominated.

11/8/07  8:18pm
Platy says:

whatever wins from Rattatoille, TekkonKinkreet or Persepolis is an awesome win for me =D

…but will probably be something crap and more “hollywoody” like beowulf

11/8/07  8:18pm
Pete says:

Does anyone know how films are submitted to the Academy? Is it done
by the filmmakers? Does a film have to have a certain level of distribution to qualify?

11/8/07  8:39pm
Niffiwan says:

If “One Night in One City” were submitted, I would’ve been rooting for that film.
http://www.jednenoci.cz/indexen.html

It’s like this year’s “The Triplets of Belleville”, only a lot darker.

As it is, though, probably something like
-”Ratatouille” (the most likely choice, and not too bad)
-”The Simpsons Movie” (I hope this doesn’t win, I didn’t like it that much)
-”Persepolis” (I haven’t seen this yet)

I haven’t seen “Tekkonkinkreet” yet either. Since it’s from the same people who made “Mind Game”, it could be good.

11/8/07  9:02pm

Nominees:
– Tekkonkinkreet
– The Simpsons Movie
– Persepolis

And the award goes to:
– TEKKONKINKREET!!

Well, I hope so. Robinsons was fun but not oscar material. I think the world has had enough of pixar for a while. We all know they move pixels around real nice-like and they are fairly engaging most of the time. Let’s let them really work for our affection now. Thank you.

Beowulf should stop getting pissed on by the hoity toitys in the cartoon world. Jah, it looks like bad news. Get off the cross and use the wood to build a bridge and get over it.

Well, I’ll see you at the oscars. I’m going to be sitting next to Keira Knightley with a Woody–speaking of pixar.

11/8/07  9:57pm
mawnck says:

The number of nominees is determined by the number of eligible movies. If it’s 8 to 15, then there are three nominees. 16 and up (which has only happened once) gets 5.

Submissions in this category *can* be nominated for other awards as well, including Best Picture.

The complete rules can be found here:
http://www.oscars.org/80academyawards/rules/rule07.html

Your special attention is called to the following:

“An animated feature film is defined as a motion picture of at least 70 minutes in running time, in which movement and characters’ performances are created using a frame-by-frame technique. In addition, a significant number of the major characters must be animated, and animation must figure in no less than 75 percent of the picture’s running time.”

The submitted movies still could be declared ineligible under this requirement. It’s happened before (last year, at the last minute, to Arthur and the Invisibles). The “frame-by-frame technique” part was added this year, and might knock Beowulf out of the running.

If you haven’t seen it, Tekkonkinkreet is out on DVD. But you’re dreaming if you expect it to be nominated. Far better anime features have been snubbed in past years. Just ask Satoshi Kon.

11/8/07  10:13pm
Jayster says:

“Ratatouille
“Shrek the Third
“The Simpsons Movie

That’s what I figure. I’m thinking the Simpsons might win, but ultimately it doesn’t matter who wins.

I’m doubting that Beowulf’s gonna be nominated, it’s too akward to be considered a nomination with the number of other successful completely animated films like the one’s above. Also Alvin is poo poo, Surf’s Up might be nominated (a little too “regular” animal film if ya’ ask me, and I know ya’ aren’t).

“Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters
No chance.

“Bee Movie
Maybe. A high contender.

“Meet the Robinsons
Maybe, probably not.

“Persepolis
I’m thinking too many successful American movies out.

“TMNT
Nah, a fluff kind of film.

11/8/07  10:53pm
crapjuice says:

My ideal:

Ratatouille
Persepolis
Tekkon Kinkreet

Winner: Persepolis.

Not gonna happen.

Most likely:

Ratatouille
Simpsons movie (heh, let’s pay hommage to a series nearing it’s 20th season)
and either Surf’s Up (mandatory Dreamworks film) or Persepolis (actually has great story and believable characters, it’s pretty hard to ignore it considering all the success it’s had so far.)

Winner: Ratatouille

11/8/07  11:14pm

Ratatouille wins hands down. It’s a shoo-in.
Persepolis and Tekkon Kinkreet should get nominated but I think the academy will overlook it like they did with other limited-release animated movies over the years.

11/9/07  12:15am
Kris says:

I expect Pixar and Dreamworks to both be represented. Not sure which Dreamworks film but I’d prefer it be Bee Movie (hey, I just like Seinfeld).

For the third pick, either Simpsons Movie or Persepolis, depending on the mood of the folks doing the nominating.

I think Ratatouille will probably win though.

11/9/07  12:36am
JG says:

Persepolis
Ratatouille
Tekkonkinkreet

Winner: Ratatouille.

I see these three as equal in quality/value (with very different kinds of values; which is best depends on the viewpoint alot), but Ratatouille will win. It can’t happen otherwise.

(That or they’ll flunk and choose “Alvin and the chipmunks”, because it has most live action…)

11/9/07  12:54am
Dave says:

What I think will get nominated:
Ratatouille
The Simpsons Movie
Bee Movie

What I think should get nominated:
Ratatouille
Persepolis
TekkonKinkreet

What I think will win:
Ratatouille

So anyone know the longlist for animated shorts?

11/9/07  3:45am
c.tower says:

I always root for films based on the possible acceptance speeches; I guess that would be ATHF- mostly because I can see some jerk dressed in a Shake costume going up and insulting the audience.

11/9/07  5:58am

Persepolis

11/9/07  6:21am
Jay says:

Kelly Tindall: Ratatouille IS eligible for Best Picture. This isn’t a list of nominees for Best Animated Feature, it’s a list of the eligible films submitted. As one of the best reviewed movies of the year, I guarantee Pixar/Disney are pushing hard for a Best Picture nom.

11/9/07  6:23am
Tim Drage says:

Yep, like mawnck said it’s highly unlikely Tekkonkinkreet will get nominated… Tho maybe politically speaking it may have the edge on previous criminally overlooked anime in that the director, Michael Arias, is American!

Anyway regardless of it’s nomination, everyone here who said they hadn’t heard of it should go rent it asap! It’s good.

11/9/07  6:26am
sudiegirl says:

I’d like to see “The Simpsons” win an Oscar…but Homer might try to eat it b/c he thinks there’s chocolate inside.

mmmm…Oscar

11/9/07  6:36am
Andrew says:

“Well, I hope so. Robinsons was fun but not oscar material. I think the world has had enough of pixar for a while. We all know they move pixels around real nice-like and they are fairly engaging most of the time. Let’s let them really work for our affection now.”

FYI, Robinsons is pure Disney. It’s considered a successor to Chicken Little. Pixar had nothing to do with it.

Just realized while posting my last post that this list is the OFFICIAL list for consideration. So my thoughts on Paprika were unnecessary.

11/9/07  7:21am
KumKum says:

my guess is:
Ratatouille
Persepolis
Tekkon Kinkreet

Obviously Ratatouille is more than sure to be the winner.
Persepolis is also selected for the best foreign movie and I think it has more chance to win in this cathegory even it’s a great traditionnal piece of work…

11/9/07  7:32am
Steve G says:

Andrew, just FYI Paprika was up for nomination LAST year and despite my high marks didn’t make the cut.
It’s a shame the guys in Germany couldn’t get 3 Robbers qualified in time. That was one of the main reasons I wanted to be on the nomination committee.

Despite all the complaining I understand why Beowulf qualifies, but I haven’t a clue why Alvin does. Garfield never made the grade and I assume Underdog is every bit as animated as Alvin. But since I saw none of these (for good reasons, obviously) I can’t be certain. But if Alvin gets cut and not replaced with some other film does the category go away for the year?

11/9/07  7:58am
Steve G says:

Never mind…did some quick research …8 films are necessary to activate the category.

11/9/07  8:03am

The Oscars are purely political, so the question of selection really boils down to where you think their politics lie and, more importantly, how astute you think the Academy are.

Persepolis
Beowulf
Ratatouille

Ratatouille wins.

Ratatouille will win, guaranteed. because the most important political statement that Hollywood can make about animation this year is ‘welcome back Pixar, we still love ya. Please validate our industry’.

Beowulf will be nominated but not win, because Hollywood WANTS the great mo-cap experiment to work and replace real cinema, but it knows that audiences are divided. It especially wont let it win in the year of an actors strike. Too Soon!

Persepolis will also be nominated but not win, because no one in their right mind would have the balls to NOT nominate it, given the subject matter.

So unless the Academy are just really off the boil. That’s your line up.

11/9/07  9:23am
joecab says:

Wow, who would believe we’d have a tough call this year?

Persepolis seems more of a Foreign Film nominee, so I say:

Ratatouille *WINNER*
The Simpsons Movie
Shrek the Third

And if Shrek wins, I am gonna PLOTZ. In the bad way.

11/9/07  9:56am
Steve Gattuso says:

Ideal set:

Ratatouille
Persepolis
Surf’s Up!

More likely:

Ratatouille
Simpsons
Shrek the Third

Either way, Brad Bird better get that little naked gold guy or there will be hell to pay.

11/9/07  10:03am

I’ll be happy if the Oscar goes to either Persepolis or Ratatouille.

Ratatouille
Simpsons
Shrek the Third

Ratatouille will win

FYI: Persepolis is France’s nomine for Foreign Language Film so I could see it get a nomination and *hopefully* win in that category, not that I have any clue what it would be up against.

Bill5925 says:

Ratatouille (winner)
Surf’s Up (very good but not in same class)
Simpson’s Movie (or Persepolis because everyone knows foreign movies are better. Right?)

TempleDog says:

Persepolis better get the nod, no offense to Brad Bird and the Pixar peoples. Damn fine film, damn important, and if it gets overlooked I’m going to verbally park my foot up somebody’s ass. ’nuff said.

11/9/07  11:42am

I can’t believe how many people think that Ratatouille is going to win. It’s the Oscars! The Simpsons will win because it’s like a “lifetime achievement” award.

Matt says:

I think Tony Mines (above) is right on the money as to the reasons why Ratatouille, Beowulf, and Persepolis will get the nominations. I think Surf’s Up is deserving, but after Happy Feet (and March of the Penguins for documentary) I can’t see another penguin movie even making it onto the ballot — people assume it’s a knock-off. Even Academy voters should be able to see through Beowulf’s non-animation, so I think Ratatoullie has it tied up. I would love to see it get recognized in the Best Picture category as well, but I fear David (above) is right: Beauty & the Beast’s nomination scared them from ever letting that happen again.

As for Chuck R.’s point about Fahrenheit 9/11, it was disqualified from the Best Documentary race (not the Best Picture Race) because it aired on TV before the end of the year. Moore took this into consideration and chose to go ahead with the broadcast anyway, wanting to have it air before the elections. The movie was submitted for consideration in the Best Picture category, but it did not receive a nomination.

Steve G says:

Good theory Tony Mines, but that’s not how the process of nominations work.
Each film is judged and rated on its own merits and then those numbers are then added up. So assuming that the nominating committee has an agenda and a ploitical slant that will encompass everyone’s vote is wrong.
10 low scores could screw up a film’s chances or 10 good scores could raise a long shot’s chances. I was at the Happy Feet screening and seem to recall that the audience walked out feeling like they’d actually seen something - right or wrong.
The big problem is that only 3 films can be nominated.

Jen says:

I think we can expect to see Persepolis because of the huge festival buzz and the talk of France submitting it as their best foreign film entry. Since the Academy can only seem to handle one foreign/artsy animated film at a time, that would boot Tekkonkinkreet.

Ratatouille is a given because of the critical and box office reception.

Who takes the third spot is anyone’s guess, but I suspect it will go to whoever bothers to launch a good ad campaign. I’d say Beowulf or The Simpsons are the most likely contenders.

Jamie B says:

I know I’m in the minority, but I love love love Meet the Robinsons - it’s such an ambitious film with a really human core. It excited me more than Ratatouille, however accomplished that was, because of it’s playful structure and cracking message; I really hope it gets a nomination so that more people check it out…

A Ratatouille, Persepolis, Meet the Robinsons would please me, based on what I’ve seen… (still haven’t seen Surf’s Up or Tekkonkinkreet, but heard strong thngs about both)

11/9/07  5:55pm
Greg Ehrbar says:

Bazooka Joe: The First Blow (oh wait, that’s NEXT year nominee)

11/9/07  8:53pm

“FYI, Robinsons is pure Disney. It’s considered a successor to Chicken Little. Pixar had nothing to do with it.”

Ah yes, bad formatting on my part. I am very aware that Robinsons was Disney. Sorry for the formating error and thanks for taking the time to reply.

11/9/07  9:30pm

I’d like to see nominated

Persepolis
TekkonKinkreet
and Ratatouille

Haven’t seen Persepolis yet but I can’t wait.
Tekkon deserves some recognition …

I wish the Oscars would do 5 nominations again for Animated Features, I’m getting sick of that stupid 3 nomination rule. And I think Beowulf is not an animated movie (look at Jerry’s blog thingy to see his opinions), It’s just live action with actors infront of make belive enviorments covered with dots on their suits to make them look CGI. And last four real quick: Persepolis is better at winning and being nominated for Best Forigen Film; Shrek the Third is NEVER gonna get nominated; anyone who suggested the idea of sumitting Alvin and the Chipmunks is mentally and sight disabled; and Teloknine–blah blah blah is just a Japanese film released Direct-to-Video in North America. Anyway here’s what I think:

If they go with 5 nominations:
Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters
Bee Movie
Meet the Robinsons
Ratatouille
The Simpsons Movie

Runner-Up: Ratatouille
Winner: The Simpsons Movie (or Aqua Teen Hunger Force)

If not:
Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters (or Bee Movie)
Ratatouille
The Simpsons Movie

Runner-Up: Ratatouille
Winner: The Simpsons Movie (or Aqua Teen Hunger Force)

Robert Reynolds says:

Nominees:

Ratatoullie
Shrek the Third
The Simpsons Movie

Though Persepolis might get nominated, I’m inclined to think it will get nominated as a FLF instead. Meet the Robinsons might beat out Shrek, but I don’t think that will happen.

Winner:

Ratatoullie

“Ratatouilleâ€?

The winner will be decided on the basis of whether the academy voters saw any of these movies with their children, which means Shrek.

My choice:

- Ratatouille (FTW)
- A Scanner Darkly
- Persepolis
- Paprika

What would probably happen:

- Ratatouille
- Beowulf
- The Simpsons Movie
- (And/or) Persepolis

IKR says:

Well here’s something for the commenters who are voting for Shrek to get in the nominations: Shrek the Third does have a few laughs, but it’s not enough original ones to make it up from the first two. Shrek has turned into a cuddly monster, Justin Timberlake as Arthur is terrible and should have been Minami Takayama (she speaks english; see Conan episode 239 to see why) or Ewan McGregor as him, and Prince Charming’s end to him is a cliche of a tall thing crushing him.

For the people who are asking for Persepolis to be nominated in the category: It could do well in the Forigen Language Film category. I mean, I saw this at Vancouver Film Festival and it IS amazing, but I just don’t see this getting nominated for Best Animated Feature after all these big shots coming in and the new thing about animated features can get nominated for any other catagory including Best Picture.

Now for Beowulf and Alvin and the Chipmunks. Beowulf I can see that it’s motion capture geniusness though it is basicly live action in a sound stage with actors filled with dotted suits to make them CGI in the movie. Probably for Alvin and the Chipmunks, I guess the people who thought it was a good idea for it to get into the entry list might have been on drugs!

Overall, Persepolis and Beowulf would do better in the other catagories, and Alvin and Shrek 3 (compare Shrek 3 to Bee Movie) will never get nominated.

11/10/07  3:08pm

Ratatouille
The Simpsons Movie
Beowulf

I haven’t seen Persepolis, and it may well deserve to be there, but I doubt it will have enough presence in Hollywood to get nominated.

I also doubt the Simpsons will win. It’s TV, and will suffer for that.

Ratatouille is an amazing accomplishment, but Pixar has reached saturation level, and the suggestion of reduced box office will hurt.

Beowulf has Zemeckis, and Imagemovers currently straddling 2 major studios, Sony, where Beowulf was made and Disney, who now support him. If Beowulf does big box office, it could just take the prize.

My personal favorite, Surf’s Up, won’t get in.

Alex says:

Well Ratatouille will win (as it should) , Persepolis will be nominated although we all know it doesn’t have a hope in hell of appealing to the academy’s sensibilities and probably the third one will be Beowulf… because… I don’t know why, it just will. I can tell.

I placing my bets on…”Alvin and the Chipmunks”! After the movie’s viewers get past “the crap factor” of the film, it seems like - there’s no movie at all! It’s all just crap!

Oh, wait - “Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters” is nominated? Whoops, folks, there’s a new winner here!

11/11/07  12:00am
RODAN says:

Were you asking for the wiener or winner? First the wiener would have to be Aqua Teen Hunger Force…. hands down, the wiener! Then of course the winner….Wishing that Pixar would implode (hate 3-D) no fan here…Still I’d have to say the rat movie…. Something about the rat cooking French cuisine. Outside of Marie Antoinette those French never get what they deserve. So for patriotic reasons…Ratatouille. I know Marie was not really French.

1. Ratatouille

2. Surfs Up (Those penguin movies do have a possible edge. All animated movies with penguins should be banned henceforth.)

3. The Simpson Movie, A powerhouse (longevity and sympathetic vote?)

Of course…it’s only Best Animated Film, so you never know what commercialist corporate merchandising lobbiests will do to make sure that “their film” gets the gold. We need an animated Marlon Brando to go up there and refuse the golden boy for arts sake. Wait? Who the hell is Art?

11/11/07  8:55am

Out of all those (of the ones I’ve seen) I think Ratatouille is the most deserving of the win. The characters had alot of personality, both the rats and the humans, plus the animation adheres to the traditional techniques that made the golden age (`30’s to `50’s) so great.

In a perfect world, Beowulf would win the Razzie under the category “Worst Live Action Wannabe Made By People Who Are Too Big of Pussies To Do Actual Animation”. But sadly, it’s not a perfect world.

Corrado (Anthony) says:

Ratatouille.

Simpsons Movie.

Bee Movie (The lesser of 2 dreamworks evils)

Winner: I would like Simpsons Movie to win but I wouldn’t be upset if Ratatouille wins.

11/11/07  6:34pm

It would give me a thrill to see Michael Arias get an award on his home continent. Best expat animation director ever. Go Tekkonkinkreet!

11/11/07  8:35pm

Will there even be Oscars this year if the Writer’s Strike isn’t resolved? That being said, Ratatouille. (Tekkon Kinkreet would be preferred, but I’ll be realistic.)

11/11/07  11:02pm

Ratatouille.

Surf’ Up.

Not sure on the third. I think it might be Bee Movie(haven’t seen it yet), as long as it isn’t Shrek the Third.

Winner: probably Ratatouille, which would be well deserved (I loved it). Athough I loved Surf’s Up also. Very different films, but equally well executed.

Persepolis goes nationwide December 25th. There’s nothing keeping it from being nominated for both Best Animated Feature and Best Foreign Language. But I’m guessing that the BAF submission was the English dub version.

J Maruyama says:

Ratatouille
Bee Movie
Persepolis

Winner: Should be Ratatouille but since it may be conisdered the front runner votes could swing towards Bee. I don’t think enough voters will see Persepolis for it to win.

Surf’s Up

Winner: Ratatouille :)
