The LA Times reports (with several errors) on the passing of Morris Sullivan, the man who financed the Don Bluth studio and produced An American Tail, Land Before Time, All Dogs Go To Heaven and Rock-A-Doodle.

We need more guardian angels like that.
Rest in peace, Morris Sullivan.

I love all of those movies :(

I did not know him, but I mourn his passing. Animation is a team sport, and business-finance types are important players. Mr. Sullivan participated and enabled artists. May he rest in peace.

This man paid the first wages and provided the training ground for many of the Irish animators I have worked with over the last fifteen years or so. He’s had quite a knock-on effect on my life.

And yet, before reading that article, I knew absolutely nothing about him. He seemed to be a completely silent part of Sullivan Bluth. Or maybe I just wasn’t paying attention.

Either way, he made a major contribution to a lot of people and I’m sure he’ll be missed.

Wasn’t the character Sullivan from “The Secret of Nimh” named after him?

Not possible. NIMH was made between 1979 - 1982 , released in 1982 , but Bluth/Goldman/Pomeroy didn’t meet up with Morris Sullivan until several years later. Prior to Sullivan they were being funded by a group called Aurora Entertainment , and then the video game company Cinematronics that was involved with Dragon’s Lair and Space Ace . I don’t believe that Morris Sullivan was a part of either of those companies.

I think it’s all covered in John Cawley’s book on Bluth , which is posted online:

How rare to hear about a finance person in animation that wasn’t a jerk.
