And the film does look interesting, although I do not know if I could stand and entire movie of MTV-styled animation… I must be getting old dawg. :-(

I like this not just because the music and animation mix is catchy (and seems more than a little influenced by the late-1990s PlayStation game “Parappa the Rappa”) but because I really want to know how woolly mammoths and Putin work into a film whose trailer is some eastern european kids having a rhyme-off throwdown. (Maybe they’re rapping about mammoths and Putin. I have no idea.)

The storyline sounds great! I will definitely try to look this up, and if nothing else, I live in a city with one of the greatest independent video stores- Scarecrow in Seattle- and I positively know they’ll have it, if they don’t have a foreign release copy there already.

Amid is bang on with his assessment. It’s a tough watch on a theatre size screen.

I’m half-Hungarian and speak a little bit of the language, but I’ve never heard Hungarian spoken so freaking fast. I can maybe only make out a few words. He says “Well, well..” a lot, it seems.

This seems very cool for Hungary. I lived in Budapest for a few months (recently) and didn’t get the chance to see any hip Magyar animation like this….

I’ve seen Nyocker. I like the graphic style. But I don’t like Nyocker story wise. I think the style realy works. But then my fooks are hungarian, sÃ¥ what else can I say except that i liked the movie.

I’m all for releasing anything unique, even something so heavily mo-capped. But if they want to release a unique Hungarian feature animation lets see Marcell Jankovic’s Son of the White Mare, one of the most amazing works I’ve ever seen, still unreleased in the US.

Someone produced an animated feature starring New Kids on the Block and Rico Suave?

I had another viewing of the film on opening night. I actually liked it more this time around.

I usually stray from movies like these, but when I saw this at Ottawa I flipped. It was really entertaining, and I hope it comes to NYC…I’d pay to see it again for sure.

I wish they’d worked out better models. The heads look like they’re unconnected to their bodies.

I think it’s supposed to look that way, Soos. Most of the movie is a blend of 2D and 3D which gives it a weird look like paper puppets standing in a shoebox (kind of like a Nintnedo 64 game or Parappa The Rapper.)
I have to say the plot is ehhh… and the Bush stuff is dumb as hell, but the visuals are something I have yet to see in a feature film. Let’s hope that this is the ONLY film like that though. I’d like it to stay unique.

As a Hungarian, I understand every word of it. :) .. The story is really about some kids, who try to make money, by traveling back in time etc., but the movie is about something else.
You should know more about the stistuation of animation business here in Hungary to have a better view on this one, and a fair opinion.

I sorta understand what you’re saying here, as I had said similar things about it too in another entry about the current situation with the animation industry in Eastern Europe, mostly about the kind of competition that has opened up for foreign companies leaving less to be desired in domestic projects, even those that come out of the pocketbooks of the artists themselves.

Of course coming soon in Hungary will be this film….

Entitled “Macskafogó 2: A sátán macskája”, it’s a sequel to a film Pannonia Film had produced over 20 years earlier (an English version was released here under the name “Cat City”), and from the same duo who produced the previous film, József Nepp (writer) and Béla Ternovszky (director). Just thought I give a shout out for this!

the district was created by a small group of young and talented guys. it is their first movie done out of 60 million good hungarian forints. (less than 350.000 usd?) and it won at Annecy. then Geza M. Toth got an oscar nomination for maestro .. etc. the sad thing is, that before the district there was more than a decade of not producing any good animation here, and since these succeses almost nothing has changed. but that is an other story. what is important is, that the guys behind the district are working on their new movie called egill. you can check it there: http://cine.hu/egill/site/

.. and there is no mocap in this movie. (how could mocap data be used for sg. that is mostly 2d, paper-cut-out style?)

yes, cat city II is coming out on 20th of december, here in Hungary .. and it looks promosing!

I know I’m way in the minority here, and I sometimes like experimental animation, but ugh. Talk about putting the Thug into “thugly”. :P
