The Frog Prince
by jerry
November 17, 2009 10:00 pm

The inevitable Disney knock-off DVD has arrived early this year! On sale December 1st from our friends at Goodtimes Home Video is the The Frog Prince. Yeah, we know there are dozens of live and animated adaptations of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale out there - but this new one also happens to have a black princess as its central character. A coincidence? I think not. We have no idea who produced this, so if anyone wants to spend $13.49 and send us a few frame grabs, it would be most appreciated. We just want to give credit where credit is due.

(Thanks, Kurtis Findlay)

I’ll bet there’s no way this film could hold a candle to the venerable “What’s Up: Balloon to the Rescue.”

Jim Engel says:

At first glance, I thought you were hyping the new PRINCESS AND THE FROG Little Golden Book…

chipper says:

Eeeek. I pushed the zoom button. Instead of just showing me a bigger picture, it was an animated zoom in. It looked like Not Tiana (Notiana for short) was going to eat me.

How come it is called the Frog Prince, but says not every frog is a prince? Does she go kissing a hundred frogs, like the little girl in the Disney movie wanted to do?

EHH says:

I remember when someone showed a Pocahontas rip off when I was young and I kept my eyes off it for the entire showing.

Ashanti says:

It’s amazing how fast these knock offs are farted out >:/

11/18/09  12:24am

I smell a lawsuit.

droosan says:

As someone who’s worked on his share of ‘knock-offs’ (though, never for GoodTimes Home Video, at least) .. I can only shrug and say, “Eh. It’s a living.”

Faced with a choice of getting paid for an honest 50 hours of work per week, or of getting nothing for nothing .. I’d imagine most would choose the former.

11/18/09  12:35am
Professor Grandiositypants says:

Maybe it’s better than the current Disney version.

11/18/09  1:35am
Robiscus says:

I’m going to assume it is better than the Disney version… and I’m judging that on the fart joke that they feature in the commercial for the film. Screw the high road! They’re cashing in their chips on the lowest common denominator content… fart jokes.

How can you argue with that right?

11/18/09  1:45am
Satorical says:

Great. I can play it on my Coby DVD player.

11/18/09  2:47am
J says:

I think the cover doesn’t look too bad, actually.

11/18/09  4:11am
Zack Mays says:

They don’t care if it’s a ripoff !!!! It’s all about the money to them jerks !!!

11/18/09  4:47am
Mike Fontanelli says:

At least they’re not ripping off the crocodile from Peter Pan like the current Disney movie is, according to the billboard.

Yeah, because of one little flatulence joke, we can already predict that the entire movie will suck. [/sarcasm]

Back on topic, I’m really not surprised.

DN says:

Are…are little girls into fart jokes?

11/18/09  5:22am
DN says:

‘Cuz maybe they accidentally ripped off their target audience info from the Shrek the Musical by mistake.

Marc Baker says:

I’m surprised Disney hasn’t bothered to sue Goodtimes for copyright infringement. Granted, the majority of Disney features are based off of fairy tales, and folk lore, this, along with most of pixr’s films are fairly original.

11/18/09  6:18am

Wow, that is just messed up.

11/18/09  6:28am

THIS SHOULD NOT EXIST!

11/18/09  6:37am
David says:

WOW! Have these guys been sued yet?

11/18/09  6:58am
purin says:

It’s my dream to grab a whole bunch of these movies and have a ripoff movie night.

11/18/09  7:52am
Smudge says:

Does this DVD show the ‘Chinese ripoff of Presto’ short film before the Frog Prince movie starts?

11/18/09  8:27am

A few years ago, Disney was knocking off itself. They haven’t exactly set the right example. This is what you get when, “business is business.”

11/18/09  8:28am

Once I met a guy from Madagascar (Yes!) who worked in these films. They were produced in India mostly.

11/18/09  8:28am
Topher says:

A really sharp move would be to re-release the African themed Frog Prince episode of the old HBO animated series Happily Ever After: Fairy Tales for Every Child. It’s even directed by Bruce Smith!

11/18/09  8:30am
Scott says:

I’m under no allusions that the rest of the film looks like the cover of the DVD, but this looks in many ways better than the film. The frog looks and feels like a frog, and the princess looks unabashedly like a cartoon. The Disney movie looks like something shredded through multiple marketing committees, and has weird characterless animation.

11/18/09  8:45am
tony mccarson says:

actually, the real “disney’s the princess and the frog” is not based on the fairy tale “the frog prince” at all!

it was loosely based on E.D. baker’s book “the frog princess” from 2002.

many of the “walt disney studios” animated movies are based on
20th century books, like “dumbo”, “the rescuers”, “the wind and the willows”, “the sword and the stone”, & “101 dalmatians”.

“the great mouse detective” was based on eve titus’ book series “basil of baker street”.

11/18/09  9:28am
Scott says:

Actually, Disney’s “princess and the frog” was NOT based on E.D. Baker’s book. The several versions Disney used to pull this together predates that 2002 book by 10 years.

It’s just not true.

11/18/09  9:40am

I think this is their most blatant rip-off yet. I think they’re trying to see how far they can push the plagiarism before being shut down. Sounds fun, actually.

11/18/09  10:51am
Iain says:

I think it’s from the same people who made this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXE95aO9V8A

My prediction is that the Tianna rip-off would be more racist than the early designs for the character before Disney responded to negative feedback.

11/18/09  11:38am
Cynthia says:

The artwork is actually not too bad! Normally the super hideous artwork of the past gave away the fact that it was a rip off. Good idea..up the cover art and really fool ‘em!

11/18/09  12:05pm
tony mccarson says:

scott:”Actually, Disney’s “princess and the frog” was NOT based on E.D. Baker’s book. The several versions Disney used to pull this together predates that 2002 book by 10 years.”

I said LOOSELY based!

and after I read your reply, I now figured out that e.d. baker’s book is ONE of the versions disney used to pull this together, after 2002.

so I think THAT fact is true.

11/18/09  12:20pm
Anthony K says:

One cynical residual effect of the Princess and the Frog theatrical release I’d welcome would be a DVD release of Jim Henson’s “The Frog Prince”… it seems lost in limbo right now.

11/18/09  12:36pm
keez says:

They gloss the covers up in photoshop to make them look better,it’s probably a poorly tweened flash cartoon like Iain posted.

11/18/09  12:52pm
Annabel Cole says:

The title is, unfortunately, catchier than Disney’s. Just sayin’.
The presumption that the French stood to be offended by “frog” as an adjective ranks with the dumbest corporate moves of all time.

11/18/09  1:07pm

Jim Henson’s “The Frog Prince” is amazing! That and “Hey Cinderella!” that they did in the early 1970’s would make a great DVD together! Disney are you listening?

11/18/09  2:55pm
cliffclaven says:

For a company so aggressive about recycling, Disney will sometimes miss or ignore obvious opportunities. Their old Zorro episodes — or even the pasteup feature versions — certainly would have racked up sales when the two big movies came out; and even Condorman might have recouped some of its investment on the coattails of any major comic book movie.

One of the Muppet Show season sets included an ancient B&W special they did for educational television, so there is hope for the more polished and marketable fairy tales.

Charles says:

CRUSH ‘EM DISNEY! LOOL. Wait, did I just cheer for the 800 lb. blunderous knuckle-dragging primate?! (pinching myself)

11/18/09  3:38pm

Outrageous! How dare they do something so derivative! And fart jokes — that makes it even worse…

‘Scuse me, gotta go. “The Family Guy” is on.

11/18/09  3:57pm
Scott says:

” I said LOOSELY based! and after I read your reply, I now figured out that e.d. baker’s book is ONE of the versions disney used to pull this together, after 2002.

Sorry—but you are wrong. The facts speak for themselves. This book is a series, and a terribly reviewed one at that. It is only a coincidence–and an overactive imagination on your part.

11/18/09  4:37pm
Jason says:

Wow, some harsh comments about Disney’s upcoming “return to 2D”. But I have to admit that I, too, have my reservations…the animation I’ve seen for the film is smooth but soulless. The humor seems too “cute”. And as for the fart jokes…no, those AREN’T for little girls. They’re for BOYS! Because we’re all PIGS! Didn’t you know????

11/18/09  4:39pm
Jason says:

I also think changing the name of the film from “The Frog Princess” to “The Princess and the Frog” was a truly stupid, lameass move. Political correctness taken to the nth degree. Betcha if “Lady and the Tramp” were made today, the Disney suits would change it to “Lady and the Homeless Person” or something…

11/18/09  6:02pm
Leirin says:

I’m not surprised in the slightest; it was only a matter of time before Disney’s latest “OMG MUST SEE” (other than what Pixar’s done, that’s what Video Brinquedo is for) got an awful, straight-to-DVD knock-off. And look, they didn’t even bother giving the main character a somewhat-decent-looking design; bad hair, creepy smile, bright yellow dress… just… what?

You can’t deny the fact that it certainly looks magical, though:
A fart joke-filled, princess-mocking, frog-taunting musical adventure!

11/18/09  6:36pm
Danny R. Santos says:

Well the only film I really am going to see is not the one posted here.

scott:”Sorry - but you are wrong. the facts speak for themselves. this book is a series, and a terribly reviewed one at that. It is only a coincidence-and an overactive imagination on your part.”

alright, it’s loosely based on a book series.

but the only thing wrong, is your opinion.

I’m done replying to you, scott!

11/19/09  7:51am

“Wow, some harsh comments about Disney’s upcoming “return to 2D”. But I have to admit that I, too, have my reservations…the animation I’ve seen for the film is smooth but soulless. It’s because today the Disney executives are greedy money makers. That’s why! And their back to hand-drawn animations will not here for longtime.

If i want to see a Disney movie these days, i will pick from the real Walt Disney era (1936-1966) and not the imitations we have since many years yet. It’s incredible how his succession forced this industry to released rip-offs from his own films and observation. Sorry but it’s like that!

11/19/09  1:34pm
Mark McD says:

No, it’s not that the French might be offended by the word “Frog;” that word has also been used as a denigrative term for blacks, too.

Come to think of, “The Princess and the Frog” would’ve been a useful title. “The Frog Prince” kind of signals the ending, although most people know how the story will go anyway.” If not for the trailer revealing that the Princess get to spend time in amphibian form (no similarity to “Sword in the Stone” or “Brother Bear” or “Emperor’s New Groove” here!), that plot point would have been a bit more of a surprise.

Can we just stop Amazon.com from offering a package discount for people buying “Up” and “The Frog Prince” together?

11/19/09  7:20pm
Jeffrey McAndrew says:

I would love to see Jim Henson’s 1971 Frog Prince on DVD. In fact I’d love to see any new Muppet releases. I know they are making “The Cheapest Muppet Movie Ever”. Does anyone know when we should expect that? Or any more season sets of the Muppet Show?

11/20/09  7:57am

Disney announced Muppet Show Season 4 is coming in 2010! I know it’s off topic, but Jeff McA asked!

11/20/09  4:39pm
Jeffrey McAndrew says:

Let’s all be thankfull Seth McFarlane isn’t in charge of The Princess and the Frog.

andreas Wessel-Therhorn says:

The Princess and the Frog wasnt made by money grabbing exec, but by committed animation artists, who love and respect the artform of hand drawn animation. the E.D. Baker book is credited, since the idea that she turns into a frog after the kiss, originates in that book. The rest is an original story that incorporates several ideas that were developed at Disney. Most people who love to rag on the movie would chew off their left nut to work on a disney feature.

cheeseblade says:

It’s horrible, trust me. I’ve seen it.
The horrible CG of classics such as Little Bee and Little Cars is replaced with horrible Flash animations. The same backgrounds are re-used over and over. Also, just like the other movies, it’s all talk. The whole movie is just WORDS WORDS WORDS WORDS. Also, look for an old man who obviously looks like Eustace from Courage the Cowardly Dog. Spoilers: He’s the best character in the movie.
