Looks great!

Tommy Brierly says:
12/24/08  12:36pm

Wow, a cgi trailer that wasn’t all about the cheap laughs. This looks very intriguing!

Victor says:
12/24/08  12:47pm

I like how they hype up the movie by telling us that Timur what’s his name is producing it. Who is Timur? Ah yes! He is the director of “Wanted”. That’s funny. Trailer looks good, hopefully they do not throw it away by adding a musical number and witty sidekick. U.S. animation needs more of these around.

Taber Dunipace says:

I wonder if this one can pull of the action drama angle for once. This is so bizarre to see after watching the short film at UCLA. Seems like this is a deeper more highly polished version of the original short. I definitely approve of the attempt and the direction it’s going. My only misgivings are the lines. Soooooo melodramatic.

Oh well, this looks like something fairly different than we’ve seen in a long time and I’ll be in line when it comes out!

Tony Wilkey says:
12/24/08  1:02pm

I’m ecstatic and speechless. The short film is one of my all-time favorites. I will, without a doubt, be seeing this when it comes out.

Hunter says:
12/24/08  1:02pm

Hmm… like a darker Wall-E… restoring order in a post apocalyptic world. The visuals were great, story intriguing, hopefully they can pull it off.

John T says:
12/24/08  1:04pm

It looks like a darker Wall-E. I agree with Tommy though, a CG film with no fart jokes is pretty interesting to me.

PCUnfunny says:

“Wow, a cgi trailer that wasn’t all about the cheap laughs. This looks very intriguing !”

I know. I really hope this a hit.

corey says:
12/24/08  1:32pm

COOL! I’ve seen the short, I had no idea they developed it into a feature! From what I remember of the short, it was very impressive. I’ll be seeing this if it comes to town for sure!

Emmett Goodman says:
12/24/08  2:04pm

Very few cliches. I am already intrigued. I can only hope that the movie lives up to expectations.

BringingSexyBack says:
12/24/08  2:09pm

Awesome. Wow, I didn’t know Timur was involved w/this. Interesting. Timur and Burton are a potent combination. Go Acker!

Dave says:
12/24/08  3:04pm

Wow this looks cool! Definitely loved the short so I’m really looking forward to this.

Fred Cline says:
12/24/08  3:10pm

Wow! I agree with those above. An absence of fart jokes and pop culture references is an exciting event. I hope this signals a shift in animation story paradigms.

Angry Anim says:
12/24/08  3:21pm

The Animation Director for this is Joe Ksander, and he is an amazing talent. I knew him when he was fresh out of school and he was amazing then. And he’s also one of the most genuine and good-natured people you could over meet. I wish him all the success in the world– this looks fantastic!

Pedro Nakama says:
12/24/08  3:31pm

Anybody know what company is animating this?

Ken Priebe says:
12/24/08  3:46pm

Woo hoo! Saw this today….looks awesome, and a very good use of Coheed & Cambria on the soundtrack there.

Funny how in 2009 we get a film called 9 (released on the 9th month) and another film called $9.99.

Sam Filstrup says:
12/24/08  4:06pm

Very cool I’m digging the character designs there almost somewhat similar to Little Big Planet on the PS3, not that it’s a problem. I can’t wait to see this if it does well maybe there will be room in animated films again then something more then cheap laughs and fart jokes.

S Grant says:
12/24/08  4:07pm

Here it comes, a shift in the world’s axis.
Thank you lord.

Riza Gilderstern says:
12/24/08  4:49pm

It looks good I only wish that every character’s face didn’t look the same. That’s gonna make it really hard to follow. Otherwise it looks pretty fantastic.

Derek M says:
12/24/08  5:10pm

I’ve been waiting for this!

At last someone trying to inject some mystery and magic back into animation! First Wall-E and now this? I can only hope for good things.

Hameed Shaukat says:
12/24/08  5:20pm

Wow! I can’t remember the last time I was so completely blown away by just the trailer for an animated film. Don’t get me wrong, plenty of animated films have blown me away, but not so much their trailers. To all the friends who have worked or are still working on this… well done! It looks different, engaging, and exciting… I can’t WAIT to see the finished film!!

Nic Kramer says:
12/24/08  5:51pm

Wow. It looks Pixar and Disney is going to have some stiff compatition next year. Good luck, Burton!

Charles says:
12/24/08  5:59pm

I hope this movie turns out good. the world needs a break from the same looking movies disney/pixar/dreamworks put out.

Mel says:
12/24/08  6:16pm

It’s like a version of “Wizards” for this era.

Ward says:
12/24/08  6:30pm

I’m very excited to see this happening – the trailer looks fantastic. HOWEVER, (and I hate to play the Scrooge in all this), but it looks like it’ll be a hard sell to the general public. I really really really hope it does well – here’s hoping it finds the audience for execs to take notice.

tom says:
12/24/08  7:30pm

A month early for the “Molasses In January” award, but very intriguing nonetheless. I’ll be keeping an eye out for it, definitely.

Johnson says:
12/24/08  8:09pm

This film was animated mostly by Starz Animation in Toronto, and some scenes shared by ReelFx. It’s the guys that brought you ‘Everyone’s Hero,’ but this looks much more promising. Congrats for trying something different, I look forward to this one.

PCUnfunny says:
12/24/08  8:17pm

“but it looks like it’ll be a hard sell to the general public.”

Yeah, all they want is annoying celeberity voice overs acting “wacky” or 90 minute student films.

Honest Abe says:
12/24/08  8:31pm

ReelFX had nothing to do with this.

Dennis S. says:
12/24/08  8:56pm

Animation has so many possibilities. I’m so glad there are those like Shane Acker who actually get to explore them.

Yay!

gil rimmer says:
12/24/08  9:01pm

looks amazing!
previous comments sum up the visual accolades well so I’d like to address another point…the dialogue:)
unfortunately, everything shown in the original short is painfully spelled out in this trailer.
IMHO the magic of the original 9 was the lack of dialogue, the world was so refreshingly engaging, the editing so well done and the music so powerful I was engaged and entertained without any need for dialogue.
now, can this carry a film for 90 min? I’d look to wall-E for that answer.

Betsy Bauer says:
12/24/08  10:32pm

Original student film was amazing. I hope this turns out to be just as incredible. Should appeal to the Burton fanboys/fangirls, but I’m hoping that they find a way to market it so that it seems appealing to everyone!

another opinion says:

“good use of coheed and cambria”

I was hoping, they were going to stick with the Knife. But, it was still a good trailer.

Jayster says:
12/24/08  10:55pm

Looks great, an awesome achievement in these times of animated movies.

Will From London says:
12/25/08  3:44am

I’m not that impressed, no where near close to Pixar’s quality of animation.

Iain says:
12/25/08  12:56pm

It looks great. I never saw the short, but now I’m starting to get interested in it.

Bobby Pontillas says:
12/25/08  8:06pm

Does anyone know where you can catch the shortfilm?
I remember hearing that alot of the animation work for this feature was done at Ken Duncan’s studio.

C says:
12/25/08  8:12pm

I heard that there were more than one studio worked on this film. One of them is Duncan Studio.

PCUnfunny says:
12/25/08  8:36pm

“Should appeal to the Burton fanboys/fangirls”

Actually I don’t see much of Burton’s style in this film.

Steve Gattuso says:
12/25/08  9:58pm

I remember the short, so I am hopeful that the feature will be equally impressive.

Loïc Miermont says:
12/26/08  5:07am

To answer Pedro Nakama’s question :
first the animation started at Attitude Studio in Luxembourg (I was part of the team there), but few months later, due to production problems, they moved all the production to Canada at Starz Animation. Duncan Studio was in charge of a part aswell.

Steve says:
12/26/08  12:58pm

Interesting, but the music isn’t. Why the lame video-game sound effects?

Ken D says:
12/26/08  1:27pm

…to clarify.
After the project moved from Luxembourg…Shane, a story team, art director, anim supe, and editorial set up at our studio in Pasadena, while Starz created cg assets. After 6 months the gang moved up to Starz for production, and we continued to animate a few sequences here.

PJ says:
12/26/08  5:46pm

Wow.

Definitely looking forward to this.

Tootie says:
12/28/08  12:15pm

Looks like a video game to me.

Stallan says:

according to here http://www.wildaboutmovies.com/movies/9Trailer-9Movie-ShaneAcker.php , the movie will be rated PG-13 for ‘violence and language’.

not many people are expecting a movie about rag dolls (or whatever 9 is) to be a Teens/Adults movie. makes it a little harder to market, but I could be wrong.

what do you think?
