Whatever happened to Hoodwinked Too?
January 29, 2010 1:00 pm

And most of you are asking “Who cares?”

The original Hoodwinked had art direction and character design that were – let’s face it – piss poor, but I enjoyed the film nonetheless. It had a funny, clever script with good performances — and took me (and a whole lot of other people) by surprise, grossing $51 million in January 2006.

The Weinstein Company has pulled the sequel, Hoodwinked Too: Hood vs. Evil, off its release schedule for the time being. It was first set for January 15th 2010, then pushed back to February 12th, and now… who knows? According to his blog, Hoodwinked’s creator himself, Cory Edwards, has no idea when the film will be released. But that hasn’t stopped Weinstein’s pre-existing deal with Burger King to offer toys from the sequel with its Kids Meals this month. Better scoop them up now, they may become quite a collectible.

Maybe this is why the release is on hold:

…I was sort of looking forward to Hoodwinked Too. Bad movies are a guilty pleasure.

But this is the first I’ve heard of it in ages. I was beginning to think I must have imagined it was being made at all.

FP – The Weinstein brothers sold Miramax to Disney in 1993. They left Miramax and formed The Weinstein Company in 2005. Hoodwinked and Hoodwinked Too are distributed by The Weinstein Company. Disney closing Miramax has nothing to do with why Hoodwinked Too is in limbo.

Eh. Shows how closely I’m watching Hollywood business. I saw that headline just before I saw this entry and they seemed to go together for some reason.

Well, The Weinsteins are in deep doo-doo, they never had a hit recently aside from Inglorious Basterds, but that film was co-owned by Universal.

What I’m saying, lack of money is the reason why this film was pulled from the release schedule.

A lot of people were scared off by the cheap animation & grotesque character designs (hope they fixed that in the sequel), but in addition to the script & voice performances, the direction was sharp and the lighting really nice. (I know, nobody leaves the theater humming the lighting.) The songs were excellent, too – the film’s villain had the best ‘I love being the villain’ song in years.

IMDB shows that it has a release date of September 3d — no indication, though, where that date came from.

I thought they already released it… weird. I could have sworn I saw a preview for this somewhere… I can’t recall where for the life of me, but I know I’ve seen a TV/theatrical trailer for this.

Oh so thats why there was a hoodwinked banner by burger king. I gleamed it over and felt something was off as I was getting a whopper. Didnt know till now that they are making a sequel. Very odd to see this.

Well i hope the company working on it does a good job. Here’s to hoping.

The Weinstein Company are the real heroes here. Saved us from another kung fu granny movie.

I keep this film on my hard drive to show others what the worst animation in a major film looks like. then we discuss how this ever made it to a theatrical release.

Huh, I thought it was odd that I saw a poster for Hoodwinked too in Burger King, yet saw nothing of it anywhere else.

I was horrified by Hoodwinked and talked all kinds of trash about it until I watched it on a flight, and found myself actually enjoying it despite the third-grade level animation. It’s a surprisingly well written movie for as crappy as it looks… and the director has told his side of that story, too. I’d give the sequel a chance, if it ever surfaces.

Well I’ll bet the dvds are already made. Since the Weinstein office closed, sounds like maybe a copyright problem.

honestly. i’ll take story/comedy/writing over special fx/character design/celebrity voice actors any day.

do you hear me dreamworks? george lucas? hollywood?

I liked the first movie and didn’t know anything
about the second movie until a friend showed
me the Burger King Kids Meal toy of the wolf
riding a motorcycle. So far I’ve only been able
to find two of the toys since Burger King is now
carrying Spider-Man toys instead. Hopefully
I’ll be able to get all the toys and get to see
the sequel.

I absolutley agree with Compn’s comment…if the story is frikin great who cares what they look like.

As much as technical execution of animation is a good thing, ‘toons like ROCKY & BULLWINKLE and most of the other Jay Ward efforts demonstrate that good writing served by good voice-talent is what MAKES an animated TV show or movie entertaining. There’s a lot of stuff out there on the Nick/CN/Disney axis that is glorified Flash animation, but is a lot of fun to watch, even multiple times.
