Danny Antonucci’s 4 “C”s to Great Cartoons

Lupo the Butcher

Danny Antonucci (Lupo the Butcher, Ed, Edd n Eddy) posted this refreshingly frank piece of advice on his Facebook page, and he’s allowed me to share it with everybody on the Brew. Even with all his years in the biz, Danny hasn’t forgotten what it’s all about:

Danny Antonucci’s 4 “C”s to Great Cartoons
1. CREATE (…new territories through art not technology)
2. CONTRIBUTE (…to the art form, not rape it for cash!)
3. CHALLENGE (…everything currently being done)
4. CHANGE (…don’t redo, copy, or repeat)
If you can’t adhere to any of these 4 “C”s, get the fuck out of animation.

All of it true.

Those 4 “C”s can (and should) apply to all forms of media.

On the subject, I read somewhere that Danny was working on an animated horror film aimed at adults. Any info about it?

Great advice!

Speaking of “Ed, Edd n Eddy”, when is Cartoon Network going to air that fucking movie!?

I gave up waiting for CN to air the movie and I watched it through other means. It was really good and it gave great closure to the series. I was really hoping to see this for the first time when it actually aired in this country but since CN won’t get their heads out their asses I just gave up.

I’m torn. While I loved Lupo, I’m hesitant to take advice from someone responsible for Ed, Edd n Eddy. What happened?

Fine ideals to strive for, but I don’t see how the Ed, Edd n Eddie guy can tell people to fuck off if they fail.

Has there been any word on what Antonucci will be involved in next?

…… Precisely………
Get the fuck out of the Animation.

Right on brother, you tell ‘em. Re: the last line: kids are so sensitive these days, they can’t take the tough love…

forgot “E” for, be entertaining. Never forget the audience.

I agree with Oscar G.

also, sell a cartoon to a network, that’s a surefire way to MAKE AN AWESOME CARTOON and adhere to those 4 c’s! right?

The real cartoons will be made by the younger generations who see the opportunities currently available and how easy it is to make independent cartoons with new technology. Tons of older talented artists could have should have stepped up to the plate to produce their own content but for whatever reasons they didn’t/don’t. Too busy arguing over animation festival posters or why pixar is great.

What’s with all the hate on “Ed, Edd n Eddy”? There are lots of things I don’t like about the show, but otherwise I think it’s pretty well done, with good animation and funny designs (the animation didn’t improve until the third season, tho…).

One of the better designed shows on Cartoon Network, IMO.

Danny Antonucci is one of my heroes in animation, along with other great cartoonists. But he has a good point in some way…Although sometimes people do the movies a different way, even if its animated. Although some cartoons today are seriously lacking alot of stuff even humor for that matter along with ideas. ON how a REAL cartoon is mean to be done, not with teenagers who talk about a bunch of crap. A cartoon without a sight gag is like a mall without a gamestop, mostly today’s cartoons I notice give away the humor.

As for the ed edd n eddy movie, I saw it on the internet because Cartoonnetwork wouldn’t give a rats ass to air the movie. Even though its uploaded onto the internet. I loved the movie because it had the perfect thing that any ed edd n eddy fan could ask for in the movie.

Oh and Joe, I heard somewhere that Danny was planning on doing a horror movie. I can hope it would be like The Haunted World Of El Superbeasto.

I find that fourth one ironic since the only thing “great” animators seem to do these days is try and be Ren & Stimpy.

Frankly, I find it to just be a bunch of elitist nonsense and believe people should just draw whatever the hell they want, however the hell they want.

Ed Edd and Eddy was one of the last bright spots on TV animation in the last 10 years. Hell, it was one of the last cartoons using cels for animation, which was awesome! I actually can’t believe CN hasn’t aired the movie yet.

I never cared for “Ed Edd and Eddy”, but I have to admit that it did gradually improve. Even though it wasn’t my cup of tea, it WAS different and original. I don’t see any of the 4 “c’s” that Antonucci didn’t follow.

I would have liked the show better if the characters weren’t on hyperdrive ALL the time. The title characters were well defined personalities, one being a troublemaking schemer, one a neurotic geek and the other a slow-witted lummox…but there was absolutely no subtlety about it. It was like they were afraid the audience would lose interest if something extreme wasn’t happening every second.

CN has aired the movie in some countries in Oceania and Europe but not in the States. I doubt they will either. At least I found it online…and wait until you see the biggest challenge Eddy’s ever had! (if you’ve seen it you know what i mean)

He did use those philosophies to heart in his show, he did not make the show as a cash cow like what some other studios have done in the past. I must be the only one on my block with an EEnE shirt! In fact the farthest he did with it is make a few video games.

No one remembers Danny’s “The Brothers Grunt”-one of the most surreal animated series ever on American TV? That show definitely contained the four C’s.

Heh, surprised someone would bring up that show (a podcast devoted to mostly sci-fi/anime did an MTV Animation thing last month but didn’t mention this show I don’t believe).

Quoted for truth. Can’t be said enough. I’m tired of watching messy, sloppy, ugly characters do gross things instead of funny things. As for EEandE, it had its qualities, most notably some really lively animation, but it was just too thoughtless and off-putting at times to be enjoyable. Just the same, I can sit through it more easily than recent crap like Mighty B and recent Fairly Odd Parents. The first really is a lame Ren and Stimpy ripoff (and stars the second most obnoxious character in recent memory) and the second – well, it stars TWO of the MOST obnoxious characters in recent memory, that brainless Cosmo and that little brat Timmy. Eckk.

Can’t say that I agree with not being in animation if you can’t adhere to his 4 c’s, but, do think that if you’re a producer getting involved in animation to make a quick buck – stay away (unless you bring enough cash to provide a decent schedule, decent wages and simply stay off to the sidelines as you support a great creative crew – don’t dabble.)!!

Guy should really read his own advice:

1. CREATE (…new territories through art not technology)
- what new territories has he busted thru?
2. CONTRIBUTE (…to the art form, not rape it for cash!)
- was Ed, Edd n Eddy not a sell out of his art form?
3. CHALLENGE (…everything currently being done)
- Ed, Edd n Eddy challenged us all
4. CHANGE (…don’t redo, copy, or repeat)
- Wasn’t all of Ed, Edd n ‘ Eddy a work in repetition?
Copying theme lines from old movies (even stole their titles)
and things were redone in that show and repeated (gags) over
and over.
