Gerald McBoing Boing

My favorite site of the moment: Curious Pages, a newly launched blog about obscure but outstanding children’s books from the 1800s all the way up through today. The brief descriptions of the books are often quite funny, and the selection is eclectic, such as this Czech version of The Wizard of Oz painted in a Paul Klee style or the Art Deco-ish etching of A Head for Happy, which is about a headless doll. There are even a couple of animation-related items, like Mel Crawford’s adaptation of UPA’s Gerald McBoing Boing (picture above). The impeccable curation can be attributed to the blog owners, who are two talented children’s book authors and illustrators in their own right, Lane Smith and Bob Shea.

    Thanks for bringing this wonderful blog to my attention. I’m a big fan of Lane Smith, but I had no idea he was working on this. I just wish that there were more posts to read on it. It’s like Mystery Science Theater 3000, except with children’s books.

    Fun site —thanks for the link Amid!
    It’s a bit heavy on Lane Smith’s own books, so why doesn’t he include the best one? —Cowboy and Octopus!
    I’d also suggest “The Crows of Pearblossom” for a foray into the macabre (with amazing illos. by Barbara Cooney); and “Andrew Henry’s Meadow” by Doris Burns, just because it’s so cool. Don’t forget the glow-in-the-dark version of “What was I Scared Of” by Dr. Seuss.
    Anyone else think that Edward Gorey should be disqualified? Those books were never marketed to kids were they?
