NSFW: The West Coast by Rajesh Bhavnani
June 25, 2010 8:00 pm
The super-talented Rajesh Bhavnani just finished animating and directing his first music video (for hip-hop artist Ivan Ives) and decided to share it with Cartoon Brew. He tells us, “I spent two years on it, and after many false starts, completed it in a little over 2 months”. It’s definitely for adults only! |
That hilarious man!
Just throwing this out there: you might want to mute this “music”….
I’ve known about Ivan Ives for about 30min now, and this is by far his worst song ( the original “West Coast” is sung by Interpol).Rajesh Bhavnani didn’t have much to work with, but his style kept me wanting more.
Ivan Ives sounds like generic rap to me, but that being said, a quick youtube search shows that animation is a major force in his music videos. “My Life(stop motion)” is made by the artist, with assistance from david gemmill the animator of Ives’ video “Juice Joint”. While the music is crude, the animation is well done. Thank god for the mute button.
that was so terrible i practically threw up
Nice video. I like the song, the design, the animation – but I’m wondering if the NSFW visuals will help it? No way it’s going to get airplay.
Robiscus: Unless you have taste. That’s what, a hiphop artist using Interpol? Win.
Yeah, it’s not so much music as it is someone low-fidelity shouting over Interpol’s “The Heinrich Maneuver”.
lol, do we need to make a few “easy listening classics” vids for you there, robiscus? That’ll chase those damn kids off your lawn!
Video is great fun, though. I like.
The music made me cringe, but the animation is superb. Great job, Rajesh!
Cute. Hate the teenybopper top-40 music, though.
Thanks Jerry, for posting this and thanks everyone for the comments.
I put the making of on my blog: http://notrajeesh.blogspot.com
It’s good, but I prefer David Gemmil’s classic video. I love the way David took his and Ivan’s metaphors and punchlines and visualized them literally.

Also, robiscus, you sure showed Ivan! Wow! Putting music in “quotes” is such original “comedy!”
the idea is an armpit like the music. nothing new. sex and robots… big whoop. I love that kids listen and watch this stuff! very constructive. awesome.
“I do not understand this type of commerce. I will not call it music.” – Frank Sinatra, Jr.
Kinda pointless and stupid. Whatever. Decent animation.
