The lead characters (the band members) are a bit dull and the music does nothing for me, but the fantasy creatures and backdrops in this new music video – for the band Sociedade Soul of Florianópolis, Brazil – are nicely conceived. Directors Gustavo Brazzalle and João Pedro Agnoletto Cardoso spent six months producing this piece at the Cafundó Studio. Check out the concept art here. These videos have recently been completed for the Sydney-based punk-pop band known as the Hard-ons. Directed by Mark Gravas at Australia’s Kapow Pictures, the two videos couldn’t be more different. Aaron Powell and Colin Bigelow led a small team to create both pieces using traditional hand drawn techniques, Flash and After Effects. In the first, Pretend It’s Vanilla, Hammer seeks revenge and hunts down his old bullies tack, screw and nail. A nightmare tale of drunken violence. The second one, In The End We All Die Alone, the Hard-ons descend into the bowels of hell: 8 Comments » posted in Music Videos, Kapow Pictures, Mark Gravas June 25, 2010 8:00 pm
The super-talented Rajesh Bhavnani just finished animating and directing his first music video (for hip-hop artist Ivan Ives) and decided to share it with Cartoon Brew. He tells us, “I spent two years on it, and after many false starts, completed it in a little over 2 months”. It’s definitely for adults only! 16 Comments » posted in Music Videos June 16, 2010 6:54 pm
Blockhead’s “The Music Scene” by Anthony Francisco Schepperd will be one of the finest animated music videos you’ll see this year. You can’t fake this kind of animation—Schepperd is an animator’s animator whose drawings breathe and pulsate with energy surging from one subject matter to another. His surrealistic morphing visuals are rooted in solid drawing and his rough animation style complements his seemingly stream-of-conscious flow of visual ideas. The pencil mileage that went into making this is mind-boggling; the only credit on the Vimeo page is Schepperd, and if he animated the entire thing himself, all I can say is wow! Along with last year’s video for Ape School’s “Wail to God”, Schepperd has proven himself to be one of the most exciting traditional animators on the scene right now. Run-of-the-mill roto is elevated to something post-worthy through beautiful colors and creative scene transitions in this video for Breakbot’s “Baby I’m Yours.” The watercolor imagery was created by Irina Dakeva at Paris-based studio Wizz. Lizzi Akana created these Peter Max-ish inserts for the Ke$ha music video “Your Love Is My Drug.” Here’s a Quicktime link to the entire piece, directed by Honey, that shows how the animation fits into the primarily live-action video. I asked Lizzi if she could share details about the production and this is what she said:

This dreamy piece of animated psychedelia was done by award winning animator/director/illustrator Harrie Geelen. It was made with no budget, single handedly by Geelen for the Dutch band Cloudmachine. (Thanks, Ruud Houweling) 2 Comments » posted in Music Videos May 25, 2010 9:00 am
This is a new stop motion video that uses an old wood burning technique called pyrography. It was directed by Sverre Fredriksen, a young animator from Norway who has settled in Amsterdam, who soldered ten tons (or thereabouts) of timber to create the images – averaging five hours of work per second shown. Everything was done analog, nothing digital. You can watch a making-of video here. It was produced by Yellow Submarine, a sister company of SubmarineChannel. The song is by Dutch singer songwriter Tim Knol from his fist album. (Thanks, Remco Vlaanderen) |
