“The Music Scene” by Anthony F. Schepperd

Blockhead’s “The Music Scene” by Anthony Francisco Schepperd will be one of the finest animated music videos you’ll see this year. You can’t fake this kind of animation—Schepperd is an animator’s animator whose drawings breathe and pulsate with energy surging from one subject matter to another. His surrealistic morphing visuals are rooted in solid drawing and his rough animation style complements his seemingly stream-of-conscious flow of visual ideas. The pencil mileage that went into making this is mind-boggling; the only credit on the Vimeo page is Schepperd, and if he animated the entire thing himself, all I can say is wow! Along with last year’s video for Ape School’s “Wail to God”, Schepperd has proven himself to be one of the most exciting traditional animators on the scene right now. Wow. Just wow. Magnificent. The motion just sucks you in so much you almost feel like your moving when you watch it. Its one of the best music videos I’ve ever seen. I’m so happy you shared this one here on the brew.
Phenomenal.
The most amazing thing about this is the way he keeps all of his ideas readable. The color is gorgeous, the spacing and timing are flawless, and the energy is undeniable. But above all that, it’s never busy, it’s never incomprehensible. This guy doesn’t just know how to draw, he knows how to deconstruct, and put back together again.
Super, super, super, super jealous.

Its too bad people don’t want to see traditional animation anymore. CGI has eclipsed it entirely because CGI is so much more visually dynamic.

This is sensational! It actually sustains the entire 5 minutes! Rarely can a music video hook you for that long, let alone a ’surrealist morphing’ animation. just awesome.
The designs remind me of Peter Max for some odd reason. I really like it.

Super brilliant stuff. Psychedelia with structure is not an easy task.
Parts of it remind me of the very end of “Orgesticulanismus”, or the climactic moments of “Akira”. Visually this is definitely right up there with those films. And the color! Just wow.

Holy cow, that was great. I wonder how much of it was hand-drawn and how much was computer-assisted – some parts looked like CG, but then again, a lot of Richard Williams’ work looks like CG too.
In awe. This is when a tool the medium does not matter. It just happends to be amazing FLASH 2D animation. The artist Anthony is a genius.

I’m a friend of the animator & the entire work is drawn by hand with a pen and tablet in flash. Also, he did the entire piece on his own and it took him from about december until april, basically 5 months in total.
I hope this helps clear up some questions!!

I always love seeing such hard work put into animation. The energy of the animator is translated directly to paper (or screen) with nothing getting in-between, just how it should be. Especially impressed by how Schepperd didn’t lean on the re-use of cels to make it to 5 minutes. Usually these days it seems that when someone does do traditional animation, they feel the need to recycle most of their work later in the video as if to say, “Boy, it took a long time to draw this, I need to use it again”, but this guy just blasts through his own hard work without revisiting anything. Hardcore.
Great work, nice mix of fast and slow and great weight on the super organic “jelly-gummy-licorice-rope-wet-leather” material. Long live the new flesh!
If they ever remake “Yellow Submarine” they had better let Anthony do it…talk about a truly mind-blowing film, that would be it!

Oh man, I can’t believe this exists. This has surpassed almost every animated psychedelic music video I’ve ever seen. The colors are great in both the muted part and the wild part. The animation is ridiculously smooth and flowing. I wonder how long this took?

I say this video deserves at least some sorta mass exposure, if even 90% of the power stems from the visuals. I find it reminiscent of the glory days of the music video in the 80’s.
Memo to Robert Zemeckis:
If you’re still committed to a re-make of Yellow Submarine, you should have a word with Mr. Schepperd first, before you start shooting sequences in Mo-cap.
