    I really like the character designs and the compositing work on the characters (not so much the smoke, water and particles) but I don’t think that’s stop motion.

    I agree that some of it has the semi-jerky quality of stop motion (the growing crystals in particular) but it’s far easier to give CG animation that look than to do the tiny, smooth keyframe-to-keyframe motion in stop motion – which appears frequently in this video.

    Not to say that there isn’t any stop motion used at all – the cracking rock close-ups look a lot like stop motion.
