Dock Ellis & The LSD No-No by James Blagden

Dock Ellis & The LSD No-No by James Blagden isn’t going to win any awards for its animation, but it packs a real punch as a short film. Actually, it’d be hard to screw up the story, which is a colorful recording by former baseball pitcher Dock Ellis describing how he pitched a no-hitter in 1970 while under the influence of LSD. Much of the short’s success comes from Ellis’s storytelling—his line “Ooh, I just made a touchdown” is hilarious even without drawings—while Blagden’s semi-realistic illustration style and oddball eye movements on the characters provide enough visual accompaniment to make it work. Even the amateurish filmmaking elements, like unnecessarily dividing the film up into parts, didn’t ruin the overall effect for me. Ellis, for his part, became an anti-drug crusader before he passed away last year. |

This short is just great. but of course a 2 sec title card scene change is “amateurish” and the animation isn’t going to win awards. He should have modeled those drawings in cg.
It is obviously styled to be mocking a 70’s animated short film. What would Modeling the drawings in Cg do ? If anything it would make it less appealing.
I really liked it! The minimalist animation served to not distract from the best part, which is of course the narration. I didn’t even noticed the title card thing.
Animators are always complaining there’s no money in it, so it’s all “amateur” isn’t it?
It’s one of those meaningless crit padders like “not for everyone”.
This short is definitely a “Touchdown”!

That was great in every way, period.
Maybe I’m so amateur that it wouldn’t bother me,
But I didn’t think the title cards took away from the short in any way. They didn’t feel out of place with the pacing or the style… It felt like they belonged there.
But hey, what do I know?

Watched this twice all the way through. I rarely watch anything once all the way through. It’s exciting to me that companies like No Mas (one of my favorite places to buy T-Shirts from) are funding (I presume) animation like this. Seems like we’ll see more and more of this as online video increases in importance to the promotional efforts of businesses large and small. Animation is a perfect tool for them.
That was amazing and I could watch it many many times. Very well animated, it was a great response to the audio.
Although I was born without the “sports gene”, I really like this short. Very funny in a Hunter Thompson sort of way. (For that matter, if I had known that pros were playing baseball on acid, I might have developed an appreciation for sports!) I’d love to see this guy animate some of comedian Artie Lange’s outlandish-but-true stories!
Wow I was sending this around to my friends on Friday the 13th and I see you got to it on Saturday the 14th! But it’s been online so long, it’s surreal that we found it the same weekend. This has been my favorite baseball story since I was a kid.
Funky. Fine combination of narration and chicken-shack animation. I credit the speed, folks. Did not know that, and it explains a lot. Dock’s account of the emotional cool-out plus the pumped concentration = no-hitter on a legendary day.

Does anybody know exactly WHICh game Ellis was talking about? Wouldn’t it be GREAT to watch that game on vid knowing he was H I G H-er than a “Georgia pine”?
