This is basically a kid-friendly version of Don Hertzfeldt’s “Ah, L’Amour.” A guy goes through a series of failed propositions. There’s even the fat girl gag.
The little boy reminded me of the old Kenner bird, which scared the bejeezus outta me as a child. Otherwise, fairly indicative of my success in finding a valentine when I was little.
Aside from the really cool animation, the film delivers 2 concepts: it’s wrong to kiss a member of the same sex, and it’s wrong to kiss a fat girl. Don’t we really have nothing new to tell since 1928?
I thought it was a good little cartoon. I have seen Ah L’Amour and the concept may be the same , but both had a very different execution. Good job on both! :)
Well done. The 8 day thing caught my eye the most.
With all the tools we have available nowadays there’s no excuse for some of the animation that fills the airwaves. Combine the tools with a good animator and good AND fast animation is possible. I’ve got another independant project I’ve got to finish up by Mar. 10th so it’s always inspiring to be reminded of such.
Was this done straight digital or did you clean up from paper animation?
Thank you all for you nice comments. Being single was my muse for this toon. Anthony, to answer your question, I did the entire cartoon digitally, but I did do rough key drawings in flash. Examples can be seen here http://jimgrue.blogspot.com/2010/02/happy-valentoons-day.html
By Kazimir Iskander. The story of a Angus Grant, a cranky middle-aged divorcee and Teehan Delko, his spirited, 10-year-old neighbor, cast away from the world on a lonely island in the American Midwest.
Unwanted visitors disturb the tranquility of a campsite at the height of summer. While mayhem breaks out on the lawn, a group of ants makes brave new discoveries in the grass.
sigh…hits a little too close to home for comfort…
Oh well…Happy Valentine’s Day right back at ya!
Really cute!
But that’s incest!
Haha ignore me, that was awesome. Always enjoy Jims stuff! :D
awesome animation james!

Great. Now I miss my older sister who lives halfway across the country (think I’ll send this to her).
Thanks a lot Jerry. ;)
Very nice. I like how you gave this a ‘Looney Tunes’ feel with the poor kid searching for someone to be his valentine. Good job.

Good stuff!
Beautifully executed. The designs, the drawings, all of it. Lots of appeal.
I always like to see what James cooks up. I always get such a kick out of his cartoons, & this is no exception.
I see that James has influence from Ren and Stimpy in this..(:
Made me smile; kudos to Jim for this :) I dig how liberated he is in pushing poses & expressions for max effect.
It was cute when he seemed to be looking at “me.”
What does it mean, really, to be someone’s Valentine?
Lovely piece. And funny too. I’m sure there are people like me who can relate to that.
Awww, very nice! Great poses and animation.
