La Fete by Malcolm Sutherland
March 17, 2010 7:45 pm

A sketchbook-style piece (with many funny moments) from Malcolm Sutherland whose consistently original works are positioning him as one of Canada’s top indie animators. Description from his Vimeo page:

[The film] takes a look at people at a “La Fete Nationale” celebration in Montreal. The film was an independent production, directed and animated by Malcolm Sutherland with music by Kevin Kardasz, and was produced with financial assistance from The Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec.

Nice work! Malcolm makes me aware of how many funny moves I see on the street every day, which never find their way into animation. The walk those two guys do at 5:06 is priceless.

The balloons are even better than those in UP. Love this little film!

A really nice job blending cutout and drawn animation styles. I’d love to hear about his coloring process.

He’s a dynamo! He also happens to be a very down-to-earth, all around nice guy which doesn’t hurt either. Amazing how he keeps turning out such varied and strong work.

This film makes you remember/realize why you carry a sketchbook around. Good stuff.

Grr.. I can’t watch Vimeo at work. But I will later at home.

Question, where does Malcom find the time to make these films?? Is this his full time job? I’d imagine.

His past films were a treat though. I’m sure this one’s no different. Congrats!
