Crazed piece, indeed. It’s style reminds me of school magazine cartoons, but animated.
This sort of reminds me of Jack Mac & Rad Boy Go, Wes Archer’s 1985 mad masterpiece.

Ian is an immensely talented, hard working, and all around good guy.
He should really put more of his work online (there’s a lot of it!). He showed me some stop-motion he did when he was here in New York. The direction, composition, and color were great. And it had more of that off-the-wall exuberant energy.
Wonderfully hands on with great drawing ! Interesting that it reminds me of Peter Foldes work. . .

I cringed when I saw it in Ottawa. But you’re right, looking “just” at the animation, it’s funny.

Yeah, if I turn the sound off, it’s *almost* funny. Some good takes and the motion’s good, and the guy’s got a great sense for the bizarre. That said, I too cringed when I saw it in Ottawa.

What I didn’t expect was the corny joke at the end. Nice work!
I have the same opinion as Ariel, I felt like crawling under my seat when I saw this, I’m a PCA alum ( U arts used to be Philadelphia College of Art ) and a trans woman. I’ve seen this “reveal” joke so many times and it hurts every time I see something like this. It might seem funny to most people but personally, I wish I could see the subject/story be as innovative as the drawing animation technique.
This is really great. You don’t see a much funny animation (as opposed to funny writing in animation) anymore. It’s inspiring to know that there are other young people who enjoy it.
Pretty cool! Had to watch it several times to catch all the details in the animation.

The humor is filth and un-funny, but the animation was great.

He accepts her for who she is in the short, though. He gets over it really quickly, revealing his own problem as well (also revealing that she cannot accept what he has going on in the least bit, so in a way the trans woman character is more narrow-minded than the guy himself)!
I don’t see what the dilemma is here.
Crude, filthy and repulsive.
But wonderfully animated.
And here I am still nervous if people will find me blowing characters up weird..I applaud the animators with the bravery to create and present (to mass crowds) stuff like this…bravo!

Hey guys, of COURSE young people will enjoy watching this over and over again. It’s SICK and disturbing (*It’s the new “IN” thing, didn’t you know?!)
Seriously folks, maybe this should have been specifically shown in a NICHE market like Spike and Mikes Twisted festival. No need to put families through the agony of watching “niche” animated themes like this in Ottawa.
I think it’s great that Ottawa selected Mak and gave it an honorable mention. Ottawa was the first full animation festival I had ever been to and it showed such an incredible spectrum of works. As a filmmaker myself, I woudn’t want my work to be pigeonholed into a specific type of festival. I am glad that a prestigious fest like Ottawa recognized the horniness of Mak.

The kid’s got skill. But, as a young animator I’m actually really saddened that the content of this could be so overlooked to the point where it received an ‘honorable mention’.
Seriously. I’m a staunch proponent of anti-censorship. And a huge fan of Spike and Mike’s. But the fact that a piece like that uses the death of a trans woman for cheep laughs was actually one of the runner ups for the award for best undergraduate work is something I find really demoralizing and infuriating. More so, that the room full of people that I just watched this in groaned in disgust and laughed in all of the predictable places that I’m sure Ian was going for. Fuck.
