Oktapodi

The French CG student film Oktapodi has been winning all sorts of awards this year including the “Best Animation” prize at the Imagina Awards 2008. It was mentioned on Cartoon Brew a few months back and now the entire short can now be viewed online at the Autodesk website (link to 60mb file) . It’s directed by Julien Bocabeille, FX Chanioux, Olivier Delabarre, Thierry Marchand, Quentin Marmier and Emud Mokhberi.

(Thanks, Matt Morris)

Awesome…..but I expect nothing less from Le Gobelins.

To bad the French cant swim as well as they can animate :)

Ohhhhh BUUURNNNNNNN!!!!!!!

Elliot Cowan says:

Yes.
This is about 860 times better than any big studio short I’ve seen in years.
Marvelous.

Good job Emud!!! ex-UCLA represent!! And everyone else too of course ^_^

That was great. The only thing I would have liked to have seen more of is background characters; that town seemed strangely deserted.

Wow! Great storytelling skills. The setup moves really quickly but everything is clear as a bell —no small feat. Great environments too! Kudos to all who slaved over it.

Absolutely brilliant! I haven’t had that much fun since Presto.

Great work!

Le Gobelins is the Pixar of France.

This short is great!

Well worth the wait!

Gee… if only the next “Clone Wars” movie looked as half as good as this student short :-(

That was great!

Gobelins students make so much gold. Its amazing. And the colors in that, oh GOD the colors. Beautiful.

Also it reminds me how much cooler cars are in Europe. I want a 3-wheeled green truck like that guy had.

This is a student film?! This is absolutely wonderful it’s easily as beautiful and entertaining as the very best shorts from Pixar. I’d love to see more. Until then I guess I’ll keep watching this one again and again!

Yeah, they are operating on another level down there. Unbelievable. Besides Presto and the latest Blur short (with the mech fight) this stands as one of the best shorts of the year, if not the best.

I’m not sure if this has been mentioned but there is a new Sonic game that features a level quite similar to this picture. Which is why I thought you might’ve been talking about the game rather then something totally different.

Sega has been known to copy styles from other people, so is it possible that they might’ve taken this look from him? Which one came 1st? Or does Greece always look this way?

What a great little short! Great animation, fun concept, overall a very fun film, & it’s all a student film?! Amazing, pure & simple!

Plus, octopi are always awesome in animation, period!

Yeah I’ve been hanging out for this one. It’s amazing what just 6 students (albeit amazingly talented) can achieve.

What impresses me as well is the technical aspect of it. The rigging of the octopi, the rendering, etc

Annie-Mae – the style is taken from the greek islands ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/frizztext/500805953/ ). They may very well have gotten their inspiration from the same place but I doubt sega is copying these guys.

Jesus H! Calm down people!

It was cute and pretty, but also nothing special in many ways. I agree it’s nice, but these comments sound like plants from France.

I’m not from France, but thought it was a great film with storytelling folks at Hollywood could learn from.

There’s no exaggeration. The short is exceptional in every way. Its engaging, intriguing, funny, fast paced- and most importantly a little quirky.
It made my day.

Plants from France? A Yellow Gentian and a Jonquil?

For six students to come up with work this solid is very impressive. And very funny, too.

It appears that Autodesk has removed anything mentioned about this short. I guess they didn’t want the traffic.

You can view it at one of the following:
