“Squirrel Away” by Mark Sheard

Screened in over 25 festivals around the world over the past two years, director Mark Sheard just posted his flash animated short, Squirrel Away, online for the rest of us to see. Made at tiny Melbourne-based Smart and Sheard Productions in just under 9 months, the film was produced by Damian Smart and designed by Brock Knowles.

Heh, gross. Definitely not the direction I was suspecting. Also, using baby sounds for the squirrel’s vocalizations is both adorable and creepy. I give it 4 nuts out of five. You lose a point for making me wonder what tree placenta would look like.

    It’s Scrat in 2D.

I normally don’t like Flash, but this is really well made. Feels like a cartoon which obviously it should. Well done.

Demonstrating that circles (or ovals in the squirrel’s well-designed head) are way easier to animate than any other shape. Very cute, though I figured he’d have worked himself to skin and bones through the winter if he didn’t dip into his stash from time to time.

I knew something was up when he didn’t react to the female squirrel, and he DIDN’T take a break during the Winter. Then it was just a matter of waiting for the punchline.

    Everything is sexual.
