“The Scarf” by Carla Veldman

Today is World Alzheimer’s Day, which gives us the opportunity to share this 2010 stop motion film by Carla Veldman, who made it while attending Sheridan College. The film has played in over a dozen film festivals, including Annecy last June. It explores the topic of Alzheimer’s through the eyes of a young boy who finds it increasingly difficult to communicate with his grandmother, who is dealing with the onset of Alzheimer’s.

    Wow… powerful! It’s been a while since i’ve cried while watching an animated short or a movie! I think the last was “Lilo and Stitch” when Lilo was leaving her sister (god, thinking about it makes me cry!).

    This is a very imaginative film using everything possible to help develop character and the thrust of the story. The use of the rubik’s cube couldn’t have represented change any more clearly. I almost don’t mind the change to the grandmother’s POV to get that white, snowy interior into the film. It’s a quietly sophisticated film.

    That was an excellent short. The rubik’s cube was the perfect touch and the character designs really brought out the character’s emotions. Great work, Carla!

    I kept thinking back to an older stop motion short film called “Undone” by Hayley Morris. It is more abstract but also illustrates the painful transition that occurs with Alzheimer’s disease: http://vimeo.com/9843182

    really, REALLY enjoyed this short. I think its pretty rare in animation, and puppetry that the medium transends itself and takes you to another place of perspective. this one does. Well done Carla.
