The Stormy Petrel (2004) by Alexei Turkus

Here’s a film I hadn’t seen before, and I want thank Brew reader Michael Lanigan for bringing it to my attention. It’s a great example of current Russian animation, much of which is still unseen by the Western world. The Stormy Petrel (2004) is by Alexei Turkus (full credits here), and was produced at Russia’s leading animation studio Argus International. It satirizes the poem Song of the Stormy Petrel by Maxim Gorky and serves as a commentary on the Russian educational system. It’s nine minutes and definitely worth watching – it gets crazier and crazier as it goes on. |

Cool, I remember watching some of the Russian animation on a long forgotten set called Worlds Best Animation series. It showcased many of the worlds top animators. Stuff that stood out mostly came from old Russia, the animation was strange, more or less experimental. There was some stuff from the Ukraine as well.
Great to see Russia animators still doing the craft, this is dated back to 2004, I’d be curious to see what other Russian animation are available. Curious to see what else is out there. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for posting! Russian animation definitely needs more exposure. I highly recommend everyone to scavenge the internet for more Russian animation.
The DVD volumes of Masters of Russian Animation are a good place to start as well. It’s amazing how much great stuff there is that nobody knows about.
Would it be controversial to say that Russia trumps the Eastern Bloc countries, Japan, Canada, the U.S., the U.K., everyone, when it comes to animation? On artistic merits, at least. Try the library, the Masters Of Russian Animation DVDs, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_animation , http://niffiwan.livejournal.com , and http://alsolikelife.com/shooting/2009/08/100-important-directors-of-animated-short-films .
