Cartoon Brew TV Student Animation Festival

It’s the time of year when lots of students are adding the finishing touches to their films so it’s a perfect time to announce Cartoon Brew TV’s inaugural student animation festival. We’ve lamented privately for years that no online showcase exists for really great student films so we’ve decided to take it upon ourselves and present a showcase on Brew TV. We want to give the spotlight to student shorts of the highest caliber—the most original, the most thought-provoking, the ones that make us laugh out loud, the most emotionally engaging. Screenings will begin on Brew TV in May, one new film a week for up to eight weeks, depending on the number of submissions that are accepted. Here are the rules: Obviously, it must be a student film. Films cannot be posted online anywhere before their premiere on Cartoon Brew TV. Only works completed after March 1, 2009 will be considered. Submission deadline is April 30, 2010. To submit, please email a private link of your film to studentfest (at) cartoonbrew (dot) com (ex. a password-protected Vimeo page or on a personal webpage). This is NOT a contest; every film that we choose to present will be compensated with the same fee that we pay all filmmakers who participate in Brew TV. Selection committee is comprised of Jerry Beck and Amid Amidi. Selections will be announced on May 3. |

where would cartoon brew be, without the people who actually make cartoons? aka the artists. DUN DUN DUN
If selected, would this online release affect the films’ chances of being accepted into festivals? Not sure if I phrased that right, but I’m thinking, some festivals require premieres or to not be online, right? So if one’s film were shown online at CB, would that disqualify the film for other means of showing?

Stephanie: Every festival has its own rules and regulations so before submitting, we recommend checking the rules for the festivals you really want to get into. Here is what we can tell you about earlier films that we’ve premiered. After appearing on Cartoon Brew TV, The Terrible Thing of Alpha-9 was accepted into competition at Annecy and Ottawa, Love on the Line was accepted into Ottawa, From Burger It Came was accepted into Sundance, and Together! was accepted into Slamdance. In other words, major festivals don’t care much about whether a film has appeared online.

What if work in progress footage has been posted on the web? Does that preclude us from the festival? If not, what percentage of WIP shown on the net would?
Chris: That is not a big deal. Feel free to submit.
I’m afraid I’ve already submitted my short as a regular YouTube film. Is it too late for me?
Jisuk: Feel free to submit. We’ll look at each film on a case-by-case basis.
The deadline for student films internationally may be different. I am studying in the UK and there are a lot of potentially excellent films being produced in my class, but our deadline is May 20th, it would be a struggle to have them completed by April. I’m sure you will be bombarded with lots of fantastic US student films but it would be a shame to miss out on some films produced elsewhere.
I really hope you guys will do this again next year. I won’t be finishing my current film till october and trying to be a part of brew tv is something I was really hoping for. Have fun with all the submissions!

Just one question about the festival.
If the film was completed after July 2009, and during this rather long time, you have put the film up on Youtube, even though nobody knows that it is up there, it can not be allowed to be entered into this festival. Is that correct?

Jessica: Deadlines differ for schools even in the US. End of April ensures a generally decent amount of student films, but I will definitely take your suggestion into account for next year.
Kate: We have every intention of making this an annual event on Cartoon Brew.
DarylT: Feel free to submit. We’ll look at films on a case-by-case basis and if it is sufficiently obscure, we can figure something out.

I think this is a fabulous idea, and not just because I’ve benefited directly from having my student film featured on CBTV. Having your work shown as a student on an international platform is GREAT, and I’m glad you both have been able to organize this!
Deadlines for UCLA aren’t until late May/early June, so if you would consider a slightly later deadline, that would be fantastic. Then again, there’s always next year. :)
Are there any other webpages like Vimeo someone could suggest where I could privately upload my film? Vimeo is giving me some trouble with uploading.

Hi, first of all I would like to congratulate you guys for the idea. I’ll be very happy to submit my first film, but I have a little concern. As an animator, and filmmaker, I’m still a student. I’m studing at an animation school here in Brasil (São Paulo). But at the advertisement (publicity) field, I’ve worked as a copywriter for some years. Does this disqualify me as a student?

Hi! This is a great idea and I want to submit my piece! My only question– if your piece is selected and you receive a fee, does this mean that Cartoon Brew TV has the exclusive right to show it?
Victoria: We have the exclusive right to premiere it and screen it for a limited period of time, but after that period, it is non-exclusive to us, meaning you can post it elsewhere.
So then, it’s just about approaching the 4th…. were the people selected just notified by e-mail or something? Though a last minute surge of submissions delaying these proceedings isn’t unreasonable, either.
