I do believe there is such a thing as over-art directing a piece of animation to the point where the message becomes buried within the polish of the artwork. Whether that’s the case with “A Year of Sun with Mr. Persol,” a glossy piece of advertising for Persol Eyewear directed by Kevin Dart and Stéphane Coëdel, is open to debate. What’s inarguable is that it’s an extremely competent piece brimming with sophisticated design and visual concepts throughout. Here’s the stylish new short film/trailer/music video for the Kevin Dart’s latest Yuki 7 and the Gadget Girls adventure: Produced entirely in After Effects using Kevin’s artwork, co-director Coëdel says:

Our tech guru warned us not to do any posts this weekend because we’re migrating servers, but I’m not a good listener so here’s a first look at Genndy Tartakovsky’s new Cartoon Network series Sym-Bionic Titan. If our site breaks or evaporates into thin air, blame Genndy. There’s lots of animation superstars working on this show including Stephen DeStefano, Kevin Dart, Scott Wills, and Joseph Holt, and the dozen or so preview images show that these guys are earning their salaries and then some. Graphics-wise, it appears to even outdazzle Tartakovsky’s earlier effort Samurai Jack; now to wait and see if the animation moves any better than that show. Comments are off on the Brew this weekend, but you can tell the crew directly how much you like their artwork through the link above.

Gallery Nucleus in Alhambra is quickly becoming the the hub in LA for awesome animation and illustration-related art shows and programs. If you haven’t already noticed their ad on the right side of the Brew for tonight’s show, take note. From 7-11pm tonight, they’re hosting the opening for Kevin Dart’s art book project “Seductive Espionage: The World of Yuki 7,” in which Dart concocted an imaginary Sixties female super-spy and developed an entire history around her film career. In addition to Dart’s artwork, the book project includes contributions from other artists, many of whom work in animation: Bill Presing, Bob Logan, Bobby Pontillas, Brigette Barrager, Brittany Lee, Chris Turnham, Clio Chiang, Daniel Arriaga, Don Shank, Elizabeth Ito, Horia Dociu, Joey Chou, Jon Klassen, Josh Parpan, Justin Parpan, Megan Brain, Scott Morse, Sean Szeles, Stephane Coedel, Ted Mathot, and Victoria Ying.
