First Look at Cartoon Network’s 2D ‘Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs’ Series [Clip]

When Sony Pictures Animation released Cloudy with A Chance of Meatballs in 2009, it was heralded for its cartoon sensibilities and stylized animation, so it’s perhaps fitting that the concept would be transformed into an actual 2D animated series.

Cartoon Network has unveiled a lengthy clip from Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs: The Series; in it Flint shows off a new invention he created to help him take out the garbage:

Scheduled to debut next year, twenty-six half-hours are being produced by Vancouver, Canada-based DHX Media, using Toon Boom Harmony. Commissioned by Canadian broadcaster Teletoon, CN will air the series in the U.S., while its sister channel Boomerang will host the series across EMEA, APAC, and Latin American territories.

The show is a prequel to the movie, before the food has fallen from the sky. In it, tween Flint Lockwood is an aspiring scientist/inventor, and his best friend, Sam Sparks, the new girl in town, is a wannabe school reporter.

The main characters from the original film will also appear in the series including Flint’s father, Tim; Steve the monkey; Mayor Shelbourne; teenage babywear model Brent; Earl who isn’t a cop yet but a gym teacher; and Manny, who runs the school’s audio-visual department.

  • Too Many Cooks

Flint met Sam for the first time in the movie, so this is set in a totally different continuity.

  • Memorian

How can Sam Sparks be his best friend when he was a teenager, if they hadn’t known each other prior to the first film?? Or am I forgetting something….

I understand if it’s suppose to be something thats not really canon to the films, but they state it’s s prequel so…

(I’m thinking way too hard about this, arent I ? Lol)

  • Lazer-Lion

The voicework’s a bit bad, but the animation is good, I guess.

  • WanderPony

While the animation is nice, the different voices are distracting, especially for Steve the monkey.

Also, if this is a prequel series, then why is Sam wearing glasses and a ponytail, which she didn’t wear until AFTER the food weather started?

    • Or… even there. That aside the animation is nice but I wish it had that snap the movies had.

  • Inkan1969

That’s some retconning to have Sam and Manny be Flint’s friends in school

  • Flick’s sideways nose is a sight to behold………

Also, the high school plotline sound like The Emperor’s New School mixed with The Penguins of Madagascar (separate continuity for more plot potential).

  • Jack Newman

To be honest, even though the 3D animation is far better, the 2D animation isn’t that bad. I like how it didn’t go for the usual thick line style.

    • Trokon Hufnagel

Pause it at 0:31 when the mayor leaps and hangs his arm around Flint, key word AROUND

  • J.S

It looks good althought they kind of messed up the continuity.

  • Trokon Hufnagel

If this is meant to happen before Flint created the FLDSMDFR, then why is it even titled after the book itself when the show has little to NOTHING to do with food raining from the sky?

    • KW

      brand recognition

  • Trokon Hufnagel

I thought this show was supposed to be traditionally animated, like hand-drawn, frame by frame, it looks too Gumball-ish to be hand-drawn…

  • MonotoneDuck

…..I’m sensing a lot of fishing metaphor jokes in this shows future. One per episode, at least

  • alee

Feeling like they just ruined my childhood movie with the continuity error :( But the animation is nice.
