Wallace and Gromit in A Matter of Loaf and Death

Cracking good news! Wallace and Gromit, who haven’t starred in anything significant since the 2005 feature The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, are returning to action in a new half-hour short entitled A Matter of Loaf and Death. The video above offers the first footage from the new short that has appeared online. Loaf and Death will debut on TV in Australia on December 3. UK TV premiere should also be this month with other countries to follow in 2009. A description of the new production:

The new film reunites Park with writer Bob Baker who co-wrote both The Wrong Trousers and A Close Shave. Sally Lindsay (Coronation Street) will be the voice of Piella Bakewell, alongside Peter Sallis who voices Wallace. In this new masterpiece viewers will catch up with Wallace and Gromit who have opened a new bakery – Top Bun – and business is booming, not least because a deadly Cereal Killer is targeting all the bakers in town so competition is drying up. Gromit is worried that they may be the next victims but Wallace couldn’t care – he’s fallen head over heels in love with Piella Bakewell, former star of the Bake-O-Lite bread commercials. So Gromit is left to run things on his own when he’d much rather be getting better acquainted with Piella’s lovely pet poodle Fluffles.

	They seem to be getting a little formulaic, why does Wallace have a new love interest in every feature? Other than that, this is fantastic news and I’m sure it’ll be an hilarious short like everything with Wallace and Gromit.

	Goodness, how did we get the world premiere of this? The ABC never premieres anything! Perhaps the world is about to end… R says: “Could be wrong, but according to TV listings this is an hour long, not a half hour. Which is cool.” It’s listed for 8:30 to 9:05, with a repeat the following evening on ABC2 from 8:10 to 8:40, which gives me two chances to annoyingly forget to watch it! ABC are also screening “A Close Shave” on the 10th and “The Wrong Trousers” on the 17th.

	The ABC seems to be playing better animation all the time here in Australia. Maybe we are seeing the work of the newish head of Childrens TV - animation producer, Tim Brook-Hunt. Anyway, I’m happy to see shows like The Big Knights, Class of the Titans, Stormhawks etc. playing to my kids…rather than teletubbies. Bring on Wallace and Gromit!

	Agreed with Roberto: Wallace having a new love interest each time is a peculiar element to repeat. The first time he didn’t really get the girl, so a second round of love didn’t seem out of place. But that second time ended happily with a solid air of finality. Bringing things back to square one might reflect real life (relationships fall apart), but given how little we actually get to see of Wallace and Gromit, it seems we’re spending an awful lot of time on a subject—romance—that doesn’t seem integral to the characters.

	I’d like to see a new outing with Feathers McGraw. He needs to get out of the zoo and exact revenge. Kind of like Sideshow Bob —only mute….with flippers.
