The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the 20 films that are contenders in the Visual Effects category for the 89th Academy Awards.

Notables such as The Jungle Book and Rogue One appear in the list, along with what many might consider outsiders such as Arrival, Deepwater Horizon, and Sully. The list also includes animated feature Kubo and the Two Strings, a recognition of the significant visual effects work in the stop-motion film.

The Academy’s Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee determined this preliminary long-list. Later this month, the committee will select the 10-film shortlist that will advance to the next round. Those films in the shortlist will participate in a “vfx bake-off” with final nominations announced on January 24, 2017.
