Hollywood Critics Association Hollywood Critics Association

There has already been a lot of discussion about whether Jonas Poher Rasmussen’s documentary Flee will pick up an Oscar nomination in the animated feature category, or if it will be nominated in other categories, like documentary or international film.

The Hollywoods Critics Association (HCA), formerly known as the Los Angeles Online Film Critics Society, has come up with their own solution. They’ve nominated the Danish-French-Swedish-Norwegian co-production for best animated film, best documentary film, and best international film. It remains to be seen now whether Flee receives this type of warm recognition from other awards bodies or if the HCA’s approach is a one-off.

In the animated feature category, Flee is nominated against three Walt Disney Company features – Encanto, Luca, and Raya and the Last Dragon – as well as Sony Pictures Animation’s The Mitchells vs. The Machines. In the documentary and international races, it is nominated against live-action films.

The HCA also has three other animation-related categories. The nominees in each of those categories is below.

The HCA Film Awards will be presented on January 8, 2022 at Avalon Hollywood. A live stream of the ceremony will be available for those viewing from home.
