Dreamworks Animation has a new chief technical officer. Bill Ballew is replacing Jeff Wike, who is retiring. The appointment is effective immediately.

In his new role, Ballew is responsible for the strategic vision and running of Dreamworks’ cg animation production platform. He will oversee software development, technical operations, and the provision of technology resources for the film and tv teams. He reports to Randy Lake, chief operating officer.

Ballew started out in the aerospace industry before joining Dreamworks in 1996, shortly after its founding. He has held a range of roles at the studio, most recently vp of research and development.

“I am thrilled to be taking on this role of CTO in a studio that has been my home for the last 25 years,” said Ballew in a statement. “I have seen a lot of change over the years, but one constant is our talented and innovative technology team that is turbo charged by our strategic partners. It’s an honor to assume the role from Jeff Wike who has been an incredible mentor; we all wish Jeff the best in his retirement. I am looking forward to working with Margie [Cohn, Dreamworks president], Randy, and the entire Dreamworks executive team to write the next chapter of technology for the studio.”

Dreamworks recently released the features Spirit Untamed and The Boss Baby: Family Business, and next year it is set to release The Bad Guys and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. The studio is also in production on 19 animated series.
