For a while, Disney was gearing up for something unprecedented this year: its release schedule promised four animated features in three months. When this was announced, we warned that the pandemic could scupper the plan — and so it has proved.

Two of those films, Ron’s Gone Wrong and Bob’s Burgers, have been delayed as part of the recent burst of Hollywood rescheduling. They were previously slated for April 23 and April 9 respectively. Ron’s Gone Wrong is now due to come out on October 22 and Bob’s Burgers has been taken off the release calendar, with no new date yet announced.

Neither film was developed in-house — Disney inherited both as part of its acquisition of 21st Century Fox. The studio has also rescheduled half a dozen live-action films it received from Fox for the second half of 2021. The announcement follows similar delays at other Hollywood studios, led (once again) by MGM’s decision to push the Bond film No Time to Die from April to October.

Ron’s Gone Wrong is the first film from young London studio Locksmith Animation, whose future features will be released by Warner Bros. The company’s chief backer is Elisabeth Murdoch, the daughter of Fox News founder Rupert Murdoch. The animation in Ron’s Gone Wrong is produced by DNEG.

Bob’s Burgers is a spin-off from the eponymous series created by Loren Bouchard. It is produced by Disney-owned 20th Century Animation, with animation by Fox Corporation-owned Bento Box.

The other two films Disney planned to release in the first half of this year remain in their places. Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Raya and the Last Dragon will come out on March 5 in theaters and on Disney+ (for a premium), while Pixar’s Luca is slated for a theatrical release on June 18.
