Quirino Awards 2020 edition. Quirino Awards 2020 edition.

The Quirino Awards, an ambitious initiative to celebrate and develop the animation industries of Ibero-America (parts of Latin America, Spain, and Portugal), held its first two editions on the Spanish island of Tenerife.

The third is being hosted online, due to the coronavirus. It runs from today until June 27.

Here are the details:

  • The online edition will replicate the three aspects of the Quirinos: the business meetings, the industry events, and the awards themselves. The meetings and events will unfold over the coming month, and the awards ceremony will be held on June 27.
  • The awards honor Ibero-American animation. A total of 22 works — features, shorts, series, and video games — from nine countries are in contention for an award this year. See the full list of nominees here.
  • Presentations and panel discussions will be held on a range of topics, including “women in Ibero-American animation,” “sustainability in animation,” and “new technologies applied to animation production.” Filmmakers up for an award will give talks and nominated graduation films will be screened.

  • Tenerife, the usual host of the Quirinos, is swiftly expanding as an animation hub, in large part due to generous government incentives. The small island is home to seven animation companies and more than 300 workers. In 2019, animation accounted for 40% of its audiovisual sector.
