Blue Giant Blue Giant

GKIDS has released an English-subtitled trailer for the jazz-fueled anime feature Blue Giant, which will receive a two-day U.S. theatrical release on October 8 and 9.

Ahead of its theatrical release, Blue Giant will get its North American premiere on October 6 at New York’s Japan Society, where composer Hiromi Uehara will participate in an audience Q&A.

Film details:

  • Blue Giant is directed by Yuzuru Tachikawa, whose credits include Mob Psycho 100, Detective Conan, and Death Parade. It’s produced by the iconic Japanese studio Toho, and animation was handled by Tokyo studio Nut.
  • The film is adapted from Shinichi Ishizuka’s eponymous manga, which won the Japan Media Arts Festival Award and the Shogakukan Manga Award. Eito “Number 8” Namba, editor of the original manga, wrote the film adaptation’s screenplay.
  • GKIDS’ synopsis reads: “Dai Miyamoto’s life is turned upside down the day he discovers jazz. A former high school basketball player, Dai picks up a saxophone and begins practicing day and night, determined to become one of the greatest of all time. He leaves his sleepy hometown for the bustling nightclubs of Tokyo but soon finds the life of a professional musician is not for the faint of heart. His passion eventually wins over the cocky but talented pianist Yukinori, and after Dai convinces his friend Shunji to learn the drums, they launch a new jazz trio whose rough sound contains a raw energy that quickly wins attention from local audiences. But what does it take to truly be great?”
  • Composer Uehara plays the piano parts for the character Yukinori, while Shun Ishikawa plays drums for Shunji Tamada, and Tomoaki Baba plays saxophone for Dai Miyamoto.
