Warner Bros. has unveiled a first look at its next animated feature, Storks, set for release in the U.S. on September 23, 2016. The film is co-directed by veteran Pixar animator Doug Sweetland (who also directed Presto) and Nicholas Stoller (director of Neighbors, Get Him to the Greek, and Forgetting Sarah Marshall), the latter of whom also wrote the script. The plot updates the folkloric concept of storks delivering babies with a modern-day twist:
Storks deliver babies…or at least they used to. Now they deliver packages for global Internet giant Cornerstore.com. Junior, the company’s top delivery stork, is about to be promoted when he accidentally activates the Baby Making Machine, producing an adorable and wholly unauthorized baby girl. Desperate to deliver this bundle of trouble before the boss gets wise, Junior and his friend Tulip, the only human on Stork Mountain, race to make their first-ever baby drop – in a wild and revealing journey that could make more than one family whole and restore the storks’ true mission in the world.
Storks is produced by The Lego Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, along with Glenn Ficarra, John Requa, and Jared Stern; all of them are members of Warner Animation Group’s “think tank,” which was formed a couple years ago to help the studio’s new feature division create a consistent brand of animated film.
Andy Samberg, Kelsey Grammer, Keegan-Michael Key, and Jordan Peele receive top billing as voice actors.
