DC League of Super-Pets DC League of Super-Pets

Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for DC League of Super-Pets, which’ll be out theatrically May 18, 2022 (international) and May 20 (U.S./Canada).

The film is about Superman’s dog Krypto (voiced by Dwayne Johnson) who has to rescue his owner and the rest of the Justice League after they’re kidnapped. But Krypto can’t do it alone, so he convinces a rag-tag shelter pack — Ace the hound, PB the potbellied pig, Merton the turtle, and Chip the squirrel — to master their own newfound powers and help him on his quest.

The Warner Animation Group-produced feature marks the directorial debut of Jared Stern, creator of the series Green Eggs and Ham and a writer on The Lego Batman Movie and The Lego Ninjago Movie. Stern co-wrote those earlier films with John Whittington, and they reteamed to write Super-Pets.

Super-Pets has other connections to the Warner Animation Group’s Lego feature franchise. The animation studio that made those earlier films, Animal Logic, is also handling this film out of its Vancouver studio. The Lego Ninjago Movie production designer Kim Taylor handles the same assignment on this film.

Super-Pets is produced by Patricia Hicks, Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, and Jared Stern. The executive producers are John Requa, Glenn Ficarra, Nicholas Stoller, Allison Abbate, Chris Leahy, Sharon Taylor, and Courtenay Valenti.

After an initial attempt at original stories and characters (Storks, Smallfoot), Warner Animation Group appears to have largely given up on new ideas, instead refocusing on adaptations and reimaginings of existing IP. Its other recent productions include Scoob! and the hybrids Tom & Jerry and Space Jam: A New Legacy. Upcoming films include Coyote vs. Acme and The Cat in The Hat.
