Few titles from Netflix’s upcoming original animation slate are as hyped up as the family action-adventure series My Dad the Bounty Hunter.

Following a series preview during an Annecy studio presentation last week, Netflix has given Cartoon Brew exclusive access to a behind-the-scenes look as the show’s executive producers Everett Downing and Patrick Harpin visit for the first time the show’s production studio, Dwarf Animation Studio, located on the outskirts of Montpellier, France.

In the video, first-person testimonials about the series’ animation process are provided by Dwarf employees including compositing department supervisor Arnaud Boudon, animation supervisors Pascal Ropars and Jean-Yves Audouard, and environment and props supervisor Nicolas Carrié.

In addition to comments from the crew, Downing and Harpin talk about the look and feel of the show, with the former describing the series as, “Kind of a love letter to animation, science fiction, and Black families rolled into this crazy, action-packed comedy.” For his part, Harpin cites influences including The Last Starfighter, John Carpenter’s films, and The Fifth Element.

Here’s how Netflix itself describes the seires:

The action-comedy series follows the toughest bounty hunter in all the galaxy, a man with razor sharp skills but also a secret – his family on Earth has no idea what he does for a living. So, when his two kids accidentally hitch a ride into outer space and crash his latest mission, they discover that their average Dad’s job is anything but boring. Dodging dangerous aliens and laser fights galore, this family bonding time goes to the extreme. Wait until mom finds out…

My Dad the Bounty Hunter’s voice cast includes Laz Alonso, Yvonne Orji, Priah Ferguson, Yvette Nicole Brown, JeCobi Swain, Leslie Uggams, Rob Riggle, and Jim Rash.

The series will premiere on Netflix worldwide in 2023.
