Rooster Teeth Studios, a subsidiary of AT&T’s WarnerMedia, announced this week that it is developing an animated series, Slam!, based off the graphic novel of the same name. If it goes into production, it will head to HBO Max.

Here are the details:

  • The graphic novel series by Boom! Studios is written by Pamela Ribon (Moana, Ralph Breaks the Internet), and illustrated by Veronica Fish. Ribon is also set to write and executive produce the adaptation.
  • Logline: “[S]et in the fast-paced, hard-hitting, super cheeky, all-female world of banked track roller derby, [Slam follows] two young women who will have to decide if their budding friendship is stronger than the pull of a team when a win is on the line.”
  • Ribon said in a statement: “Billy Wee and the team at HBO Max geeked out just as hard as we did when talking about where this could go in storytelling and animation. That’s when we knew we’d found the perfect home. We’re so excited to make this rough and tumble, emotional, honest show about what it means to surrender your life (and your knees!) to roller derby.”
  • Series will be made using a combination of rotoscope and cg animation. Austin, Texas-based Minnow Mountain, which handled the animation on Amazon Prime’s Undone, is onboard as the animation company. They will produce with Rooster Teeth and Boom! Studios.
  • Rooster Teeth Studios’s productions include Gen: Lock (HBO Max) and Transformers: War for Cybertron Trilogy ( Netflix). It is currently in development on Brian Michael Bendis’s Cover, also for HBO Max. Through its parent company, Rooster Teeth, it has produced web series like RWBY and Red vs. Blue.
