As a follow-up to its pioneering report on the Southeast Asia animation industry, the government agency Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) has launched a sweeping survey of the video game industry in Southeast Asia, and it is inviting studios in the region to participate.

The survey, which will run throughout April and May, will contribute to its SEA Game Industry Report 2021, to be published later this year. The report will assess the strengths, challenges, and overall direction of the game industry in the region. It will also draw on interviews with companies and industry associations, as well as data from market research firms.

Game companies from Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam are able to take part in the survey, which can be accessed HERE.

According to MDEC, Southeast Asia’s game market is growing fast: it amounted to USD$5.8 billion in 2020, compared to $4.4 billion in 2019. It was previously studied in the SEA Game Industry Initiative Report 2015, also compiled by MDEC (read the report here).

The agency states: “Research in 2021 will likely touch on the natural convergence in the digital content sector between games and related creative industries such as animation, visual effects, and the like, providing valuable insight on the larger industry.”

MDEC is tasked with driving Malaysia’s digital economy, including a thriving animation industry, bu the organization also works to collect and distribute region-wide data as the economies in that region are closely linked. In addition to providing financial and professional support to artists and producers, MDEC also organizes the annual Kre8tif! animation conference.
